Mark 14:32-42 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 14


 

32. και ερχονται εις χωριον ου το ονομα γεθσημανη[1] και λεγει τοις μαθηταις αυτου καθισατε ωδε εως προσευξωμαι

And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”

33. και παραλαμβανει τον πετρον και τον[2] ιακωβον και [3] ιωαννην μεθ[4] εαυτου[5] και ηρξατο εκθαμβεισθαι και αδημονειν

And he took with him Peter and James and John and began to be greatly troubled and distressed.

34. και λεγει αυτοις περιλυπος εστιν η ψυχη μου εως θανατου μεινατε ωδε και γρηγορειτε

And he said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”

35. και προελθων[6] μικρον επεσεν[7] επι της γης και προσηυχετο ινα ει δυνατον εστιν παρελθη απ αυτου η ωρα

And going forward a little, he fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

36. και ελεγεν αββα ο πατηρ παντα δυνατα σοι παρενεγκε το ποτηριον απ εμου τουτο αλλ ου τι εγω θελω αλλα τι συ

And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.”

37. και ερχεται και ευρισκει αυτους καθευδοντας και λεγει τω πετρω σιμων καθευδεις ουκ ισχυσας μιαν ωραν γρηγορησαι

And he came and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour?

38. γρηγορειτε και προσευχεσθε ινα μη εισελθητε[8] εις πειρασμον το μεν πνευμα προθυμον η δε σαρξ ασθενης

Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

39. και παλιν απελθων προσηυξατο τον αυτον λογον ειπων

And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.

40. και υποστρεψας[9] ευρεν αυτους παλιν καθευδοντας ησαν γαρ οι οφθαλμοι αυτων καταβαρυνομενοι[10] και ουκ ηδεισαν τι αυτω αποκριθωσιν

And returning, he found them sleeping again, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer him.

41. και ερχεται το τριτον και λεγει αυτοις καθευδετε το[11] λοιπον και αναπαυεσθε απεχει ηλθεν η ωρα ιδου παραδιδοται ο υιος του ανθρωπου εις τας χειρας των αμαρτωλων

And he came the third time and said to them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42. εγειρεσθε αγωμεν ιδου ο παραδιδους με ηγγικεν

Arise! Let us go. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand.”



[1] NA-Text and Vg-St read “γεθσημανι”. See footnote on Matthew 26:36.

[2] NA-Text brackets the definite article “τον”. M-Text, WPF35 and PT omit it. The omission is supported by codices א, C, D, Θ, Ψ, 083, 0116, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The inclusion is supported by codices A, B, K, L, W, family of manuscripts ƒ1 and minuscule 1010. The inclusion of the article is more in line with Mark’s writing style in agreement with 9:2. The article has been maintained in the text.

[3] NA-Text brackets the definite article “τον”.

[4] NA-Text reads “μετ”.

[5] NA-Text reads “αυτου”.

[6] M-Text reads “προσελθων”, rendering “he went towards them” instead of “he went forward”. This spelling is supported by codices A, C, D, L, Θ, Ψ, 0116, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 565, 700 and the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by codices א, B, K, N, W and 083. Both forms are well supported.

[7] NA-Text reads “επιπτεν” (imperfect instead of second aorist).

[8] NA-Text reads “ελθητε”, which is a reduction possibly caused by visual homoeoarcton (εισελθητε, thus missing “εισ”). A scribe noticed the error in codex Sinaiticus and corrected it in the 600’s.

[9] NA-Text reads “ελθων”. This simplification of “υποστρεψας” (returning) into “ελθων” (coming) with the transposition of again appears to be a harmonization to the parallel passage in Matthew 26:43.

[10] NA-Text, WPF35 and P-Text read “καταβαρυνομενοι”, rendering "for their eyes were very heavy", which is supported by codices אc, D, W and part of the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by codices א, Θ, part of the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. This is the verb in the parallel passage in Matthew 26:43 that was likely transferred to Mark. The Greek text has then been adjusted following the NA-Text.

[11] M-Text omits “το”, which is supported by codices A, C, D, L, W, Ψ, minuscules 28, 892, 1010 and the Byzantine manuscripts. The inclusion is supported by codices א, B, K, N, Γ, Δ, Θ, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 565, 700, 1241, 1424 and Theophylact.  The TR is well supported and does not need correction.
