Chapter 10
13. και προσεφερον αυτω
παιδια ινα αψηται αυτων οι δε μαθηται επετιμων τοις προσφερουσιν And they were bringing to him little
children, that he should touch them, but the disciples rebuked those who brought
them[1]. |
14. ιδων δε ο ιησους
ηγανακτησεν και ειπεν αυτοις αφετε τα παιδια ερχεσθαι προς με και μη κωλυετε
αυτα των γαρ τοιουτων εστιν η βασιλεια του θεου But when Jesus saw it, he was moved
with indignation and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; [2] do not hinder them, for of
such is kingdom of God. |
15. αμην λεγω υμιν ος εαν[3] μη
δεξηται την βασιλειαν του θεου ως παιδιον ου μη εισελθη εις αυτην Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom
of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” |
16. και εναγκαλισαμενος αυτα
τιθεις τας χειρας επ αυτα ευλογει[4] αυτα And he took them up in his arms, laid
the hands on them and blessed them. |
[1] NA-Text omits “those who
brought” and renders “the disciples rebuked them”. The omission is certainly the
product of harmonization with Matthew 19:13. The evidence shows that this is a
local adjustment limited to Alexandrian majuscules and reflected in Coptic manuscripts.
[2] NA-Text, WPF35 and M-Text omit “and”, which is supported by codex B and the Byzantine manuscripts. The inclusion of the conjunction is supported by codices א, A, C, D, Θ and Theophylact. Even though the support for the inclusion is excellent here, the conjunction was likely added here to harmonize the text to the parallel passage in Luke 18:16 that reads the verbatim this verse from “αφετε” until the end of the verse. It is more prudent therefore to omit the conjunction here.
[3] NA-Text reads “αν”. This is a typical Alexandrian reading.
[4] NA-Text reads “κατευλογει” and omits “αυτα” (supported by codices א, B and
Θ). M-Text reads “ευλογει” (supported by the
Byzantine manuscripts and codex D). Theophylact reads “ευλογησει”. The Greek text has been adjusted
following the M-text. This is just a spelling adjustment. The meaning and the
verbal tense remain the same.
