Mark 11:12-19 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 11



12. και τη επαυριον εξελθοντων αυτων απο βηθανιας επεινασεν

Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, he was hungry.

13. και ιδων συκην απο[1] μακροθεν εχουσαν φυλλα ηλθεν ει αρα ευρησει τι εν αυτη και ελθων επ αυτην ουδεν ευρεν ει μη φυλλα ου γαρ ην καιρος συκων[2]

And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, he came to see if perhaps he might find anything on it. And when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.

14. και αποκριθεις ειπεν αυτη μηκετι εκ σου εις τον αιωνα μηδεις καρπον φαγοι και ηκουον οι μαθηται αυτου

And answering, he[3] said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And his disciples heard it.

15. και ερχονται εις ιεροσολυμα και εισελθων εις το ιερον ηρξατο εκβαλλειν τους πωλουντας και [4] αγοραζοντας εν τω ιερω και τας τραπεζας των κολλυβιστων και τας καθεδρας των πωλουντων τας περιστερας κατεστρεψεν

And they came to Jerusalem, and he[5] entered the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold the doves.

16. και ουκ ηφιεν ινα τις διενεγκη σκευος δια του ιερου

And he would not allow anyone to carry a vessel through the temple.

17. και εδιδασκεν λεγων[6] αυτοις ου γεγραπται οτι ο οικος μου οικος προσευχης κληθησεται πασιν τοις εθνεσιν υμεις δε εποιησατε[7] αυτον σπηλαιον ληστων

And he taught, saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers!”

18. και ηκουσαν οι αρχιερεις και οι γραμματεις και εζητουν πως αυτον απολεσωσιν[8] εφοβουντο γαρ αυτον οτι[9] πας ο οχλος εξεπλησσετο επι τη διδαχη αυτου

And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking how they might destroy him. For they feared him, because all the multitude was astonished at his teaching.

19. και οτε[10] οψε εγενετο εξεπορευετο[11] εξω της πολεως

And when evening came, he went out of the city.



[1] NA-Text and Vg-St add “απο” (Latin equivalent: “a”), which is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Theophylact. The Greek text has been corrected following the NA-Text.

[2] NA-Text reads “ο γαρ καιρος ουκ ην συκων”. This is a local reading crafted by Alexandrian scribes. The meaning is the same.

[3] NA-Text and Vg-St omit the proper noun “Jesus” and render “And answering, he said to it”, which is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and the Diatessaron. The Byzantine manuscripts, Bede and Theophylact support the inclusion. The proper noun was added for clarification purposes that the hearer might know who is cursing the fig tree. The proper name has been dropped, following the NA-text.

[4] NA-Text and P-Text add the definite article “τους” and render “those who sold and those who bought”, why is supported by codices א, A and B. The omission is supported by codices D, Θ, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. No need of correction.

[5] NA-Text and Vg-St omit the proper noun “Jesus” and render “and he entered the temple”, which is supported by codices א, B and D. The inclusion is supported by codices Θ, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The proper noun was added to make a distinction between the disciples and Jesus as the one doing the action of driving people out of the temple. The proper noun has been dropped following the NA-Text.

[6] NA-Text reads “και ελεγεν” and renders “and he was saying to them”.

[7] NA-Text and Vg-St read “πεποιηκατε” (perfect instead of aorist, Latin equivalent: “fecistis”), which is supported by codices B, L, Δ, Ψ and minuscule 892. The aorist is supported by codices א, A, C, D, W, Θ, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 33, 565, 700 and 1424. Even though the parallel passage in Luke 19:46 reads in the aorist tense, the support is too strong on the side of the Byzantine reading. Therefore, this verbal tense remains unchanged.

[8] NA-Text, P-Text and M-Text read “απολεσωσιν” (aorist subjunctive instead of future indicative), which is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Theophylact. The aorist subjunctive is certainly the correct reading here. The Greek text has been adjusted following the NA-Text and the M-Text.

[9] NA-Text omits “οτι”.

[10] NA-Text reads “οταν”.

[11] NA-Text reads “εξεπορευοντο” (plural instead of singular) and renders “they went out”.
