Mark 12:13-17 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Mark

Chapter 12

And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and the Herodians, that they might catch him in a word.

And when they had come, they said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are true, and do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you do not show partiality[2], but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?

Shall we give, or shall we not give?” But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why do you tempt me? Bring me a denarius, that I may see it.”

And they brought it. And he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” And they said to him, “Caesar’s.”

And answering[5], Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him.

[1] NA-Text replaces “δε” by “και” and places it at the beginning of the verse with the omission of the definite article.

[2] See footnote in Matthew 22:16

[3] NA-Text reads “ειπαν”. Same verbal tense, different spelling.

[4] NA-Text and Vg-St read “εξεθαυμαζον” (marveled greatly, imperfect instead of aorist, Latin equivalent: “mirabantur”), which is supported by codices א and B. Codex D reads “εθαυμαζοντο” (were amazed). Codex Θ reads “εθαυμαζον” (imperfect, first-person singular, “was amazed”). The TR is supported by codices A, C, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. Because of the instability in the other transmission lines, it is not prudent to change the text here.

[5] NA-Text omits “answering”.
