Mark 13:24-31 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Mark

Chapter 13

24. αλλ[1] εν εκειναις ταις ημεραις μετα την θλιψιν εκεινην ο ηλιος σκοτισθησεται και η σεληνη ου δωσει το φεγγος αυτης

But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light,

25. και οι αστερες του ουρανου εσονται εκπιπτοντες[2] και αι δυναμεις αι εν τοις ουρανοις σαλευθησονται

and the stars of heaven will fall, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken.

26. και τοτε οψονται τον υιον του ανθρωπου ερχομενον εν νεφελαις μετα δυναμεως πολλης και δοξης

And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

27. και τοτε αποστελει τους αγγελους αυτου και επισυναξει τους εκλεκτους αυτου εκ των τεσσαρων ανεμων απ ακρου γης εως ακρου ουρανου

And then he will send out his[3] angels and will gather his[4] elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

28. απο δε της συκης μαθετε την παραβολην οταν αυτης ηδη ο κλαδος απαλος γενηται και εκφυη τα φυλλα γινωσκετε οτι εγγυς το θερος εστιν

“Now learn this parable from the fig tree. When its branch has already become tender and puts out leaves, you know that the summer is near.

29. ουτως και υμεις οταν ταυτα ιδητε γινομενα γινωσκετε οτι εγγυς εστιν επι θυραις

So you also, when you see these things happening, know that it is near, at the doors.

30. αμην λεγω υμιν οτι ου μη παρελθη η γενεα αυτη μεχρις ου παντα ταυτα γενηται

Truly I say to you that this generation will not pass away until all these things happen.

31. ο ουρανος και η γη παρελευσονται[5] οι δε λογοι μου ου μη παρελθωσιν[6]

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

[1] NA-Text reads “αλλα”, uncontracted form of the same word.

[2] NA-Text reads “και οι αστερες εσονται εκ του ουρανου πιπτοντες”, thus rendering “and the stars will be falling from heaven”. This is just a different arrangement of words with a slightly different meaning. The PT adopted this arrangement in their compilation.

[3] NA-Text omits the pronoun “his” and renders “the angels”.

[4] NA-Text brackets the pronoun “his” and renders “the elect” as a possibility.

[5] M-Text reads “παρελευσεται” (singular instead of plural). The TR is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Theophylact.

[6] NA-Text, PT and Vg-St read “παρελευσονται” (future middle deponent indicative instead of second aorist active subjunctive, Latin equivalent: “transibunt”), which is supported by codices א and B. The TR is supported by codices D, Θ, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. Even though the parallel passage in Matthew 24:35 reads “παρελθωσιν”, looking at the evidence, internal harmonization to the first occurrence of “παρελευσονται” in the Alexandrian text seems to be more likely. But the Alexandrian reading is obviously viable and strong, especially because the parallel passage reads this verse verbatim, which increases significantly the potential for scribal harmonizations. The verbal tense remains unchanged, even though this difference does not affect translation.
