Mark 14:22-31 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 14


 

22. και εσθιοντων αυτων λαβων ο ιησους αρτον ευλογησας εκλασεν και εδωκεν αυτοις και ειπεν λαβετε τουτο εστιν το σωμα μου

And as they were eating, Jesus[1] took bread, and when he had blessed it, he broke it and gave to them, and said, “Take [2]; this is my body.”

23. και λαβων το[3] ποτηριον ευχαριστησας εδωκεν αυτοις και επιον εξ αυτου παντες

And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them. And they all drank of it.

24. και ειπεν αυτοις τουτο εστιν το αιμα μου το[4] της καινης διαθηκης το υπερ πολλων εκχυννομενον[5]

And he said to them, “This is my blood of the new[6] covenant, which is poured out for many.

25. αμην λεγω υμιν οτι ουκετι ου μη πιω εκ του γενηματος[7] της αμπελου εως της ημερας εκεινης οταν αυτο πινω καινον εν τη βασιλεια του θεου

Truly I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26. και υμνησαντες εξηλθον εις το ορος των ελαιων

And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27. και λεγει αυτοις ο ιησους οτι παντες σκανδαλισθησεσθε εν εμοι εν τη νυκτι ταυτη οτι γεγραπται παταξω τον ποιμενα και διασκορπισθησεται[8] τα προβατα

And Jesus said to them, “All of you will fall away because of me this night[9], for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

28. αλλα μετα το εγερθηναι με προαξω υμας εις την γαλιλαιαν

But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”

29. ο δε πετρος εφη αυτω και ει παντες σκανδαλισθησονται αλλ ουκ εγω

But Peter said to him, “Even if they all fall away, yet I will not.”

30. και λεγει αυτω ο ιησους αμην λεγω σοι οτι συ[10] σημερον [14] τη νυκτι ταυτη πριν η δις αλεκτορα φωνησαι τρις απαρνηση με

And Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

31. ο δε εκ περισσου ελεγεν[11] μαλλον εαν με δεη συναποθανειν σοι ου μη σε απαρνησομαι[12] ωσαυτως δε και παντες ελεγον

But he spoke more[13] vehemently, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said likewise.



[1] NA-Text omits “Jesus”. The omission here is possibly due to harmonization with the following verse that has the same participle “taking” before “the cup”.

[2] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “eat”. The omission is supported by codices א, A, B, C, D, K, L, P, U, W, Δ, Θ, Π, Ψ, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 565, 700, 788, 892 and 1424, old Latin, the Syriac versions and the Coptic versions. The inclusion is supported by codices Γ, 0116, family of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscules 28, 1010, 1241, 1342, 2427, the Byzantine manuscripts, the old Latin codex itff2, some manuscripts of the Bohairic Coptic version and Theophylact. It is evident that this is a later addition to the original text, possibly due to harmonization to Matthew 26:26 or a liturgical memory of the verb “eat” following “take”. This verb has been removed from the Greek text and the translation following the NA-Text.

[3] NA-Text omits the definite article “το” before “cup”, which is possibly a harmonization to the omission of the article before “bread” in the previous verse.

[4] NA-Text omits the definite article “το” before “the new covenant”, which may have been excised by being superfluous.

[5] NA-Text reads “εκχυννομενον υπερ πολλων”, which is a local rearrangement of words found in Alexandrian manuscripts. The spelling of the verb and the preposition are well supported by codices א, B, C, D, L, W, Δ, Θ, Ψ, minuscules 565 and 892, the old Latin codex ita, some manuscripts of the Coptic version and the Bohairic Coptic version versus the support for the Byzantine text from codex A, the Byzantine manuscripts and family of manuscripts ƒ1. The Greek text has been adjusted accordingly.

[6] NA-Text omits “new”, probably due to a scribal error caused by visual homoeoteleuton (καινης διαθηκης, thus missing “new”). Only 0.5% of the Greek manuscripts omit “new”. The Latin compilations also read “new”.

[7] NA-Text and M-Text read “γενηματος”, which is supported by codices א, B, Θ and the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by codex D and Theophylact. The spelling has been adjusted in the Greek text.

[8] NA-Text reads “διασκορπισθησονται”. See footnote in Matthew 26:31.

[9] NA-Text omits “because of me this night”. The omission is supported by codices א, B, C*, D, L, Γ, Δ, Ψ*, Ω, minuscules 2, 828, 1010, 1342 and 2427, the old Latin codices itb, itd, itff2 and itq and part of the Bohairic Coptic version and some manuscripts of the Sahidic Coptic version. The inclusion is supported by codices A, C2, K, (N), W, Θ, family of manuscripts ƒ1, (family of manuscripts ƒ13), minuscules 565, 579, 700, 892, 1241, 1424 and 2542, the Byzantine manuscripts, the old Latin codex itc, the Peshitta, the Harklean Syriac version, some manuscripts of the Bohairic and Sahidic Coptic versions. Codices G, Ψc, minuscules 28, 157, the old Latin codices ita, itaur, itf, iti, itk and itl, the Syriac Sinaiticus and some manuscripts of the Sahidic and Bohairic Coptic versions omit “this night”. The vulgate of Stuttgart and some manuscripts of the Bohairic Coptic version omit “because of me”. These partial omissions are suggestive of parableptic errors in the Greek copies behind them (εν εμοι εν, thus missing “because of me”; τη νυκτι ταυτη, thus missing “this night” with the subsequent removal of the article “τη” that would have appeared non-sensical). In this scenario, it is not safe to adopt the shorter reading. Even though there is some risk of harmonization to Matthew 26:31, we notice that the Matthean “τοτε”, “υμεις”, “γαρ” and “της ποιμνης” have not been transferred to Mark, which is a sign that the originality of the Markan reading has been preserved in the M-Text, PT, WPF35 and the Clementine vulgate.

[10] NA-Text, M-Text, PT, WPF35 and Vg-St add “συ” (Latin equivalent: “tu”), which is supported by codex B, the Byzantine manuscripts, Bede and Theophylact. The omission is supported by codex א, D and Θ. The pronoun may have been lost by visual homoeoarcton (σημερον συ, thus missing “συ”). The pronoun has been added to the Greek text, even though this emphasis can be silent in the English translation.

[11] NA-Text reads “ο δε εκπερισσως ελαλει”. Similar meaning.

[12] M-Text reads “απαρνησωμαι” (aorist subjunctive instead of future indicative), which is supported by codices א, K, Γ, 083, minuscules 892, 1010v.r., the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The TR is supported by codices B, D and Θ. Both are well supported.

[13] NA-Text omits “more”, which was possibly missed by visual homoeoteleuton (ελεγεν μαλλον, thus missing “more”).

[14] NA-Text omits “εν”, which is supported by codices א, B, C, D, L, W, Θ, Ψ, 083, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 565, 700 and 892 and the old Latin codices. The inclusion is supported by codex A, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. This preposition is a natural addition to the text. It has been removed from the Greek text following the NA-Text.
