Mark 11:27-33 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 11



27. και ερχονται παλιν εις ιεροσολυμα και εν τω ιερω περιπατουντος αυτου ερχονται προς αυτον οι αρχιερεις και οι γραμματεις και οι πρεσβυτεροι

And they came again to Jerusalem, and as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him,

28. και λεγουσιν[1] αυτω εν ποια εξουσια ταυτα ποιεις και τις σοι την εξουσιαν ταυτην εδωκεν ινα ταυτα ποιης

and they said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things? And[2] who gave you this authority to do these things?”

29. ο δε ιησους αποκριθεις ειπεν αυτοις επερωτησω υμας καγω[3] ενα λογον και αποκριθητε μοι και ερω υμιν εν ποια εξουσια ταυτα ποιω

And answering, Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question. Then answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

30. το βαπτισμα το[4] ιωαννου εξ ουρανου ην η εξ ανθρωπων αποκριθητε μοι

The baptism of John—was it from heaven, or from men? Answer me.”

31. και διελογιζοντο[5] προς εαυτους λεγοντες εαν ειπωμεν εξ ουρανου ερει δια τι ουν[6] ουκ επιστευσατε αυτω

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven;’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’

32. αλλ[7] [8] ειπωμεν εξ ανθρωπων εφοβουντο τον λαον απαντες γαρ ειχον τον ιωαννην οτι οντως προφητης ην

But should we say, ‘From men’”—they feared the people[9], for all held John to be a prophet indeed.

33. και αποκριθεντες λεγουσιν τω ιησου ουκ οιδαμεν και ο ιησους αποκριθεις λεγει αυτοις ουδε εγω λεγω υμιν εν ποια εξουσια ταυτα ποιω

And answering, they said to Jesus, “We do not know.” And answering[10], Jesus said to them, “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.”



[1] NA-Text reads “ελεγον” (imperfect instead of present).

[2] NA-Text and P-Text read “Or” (Gr.: “η”), which is supported by codices א, B and Θ. “and” is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The wording in this verse is closer to the parallel passage in Luke 20:2 than Matthew 21:24, which is an indication that the Alexandrian “or” is likely a harmonization to the parallel passage. The Byzantine stands as the safest reading.

[3] NA-Text omits “καγω”. M-text reads “και εγω” (uncontracted form) which is supported by Theophylact. Codices א, A, D, K, Θ, minuscules 565 and 1424 support the contracted form. The TR is very well supported. The Byzantine “και εγω” is likely a scribal harmonization to the second “και εγω” in the verse.

[4] NA-Text adds the definite article “το” before John, which is supported by codices א, A, B, C, D, L, Δ, Θ and minuscule 33. The omission is supported by codices W, Ψ, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The support for the inclusion of the article is excellent. It was probably omitted because of the first article before “baptism”. The article has been added to the Greek text.

[5] NA-Text reads “διελογιζοντο”, which is supported by codices א, B, C, D, K, L, W, Δ, Θ, Ψ, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 28, 33, 565, 892 and 1424. The TR is supported by codices A, N, Γ, minuscules 700, 1010, 1241, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. Byzantine scribes may have lost “δι” by parablepsis (και διελογιζοντο, thus missing “δι”). The support for the Alexandrian “διελογιζοντο” is excellent and has been adopted in the Greek text.

[6] NA-Text brackets “ουν”.

[7] NA-Text and P-Text read “αλλα”, which is supported by codices א and B. The TR is suppoted by codices Θ and Theophylact. No need of correction.

[8] NA-Text, Vg-St, M-Text, P-Text and WPF35 omits “εαν”, which is supported by codices א, B and the Byzantine manuscripts. Codex D reads “εαν ειπωμεν”, which is how the fifth edition of Erasmus’ TR read. Stephanus added in 1550 “αλλ” at the beginning of the verse and reverted to the reading in Erasmus first edition of the TR, which was kept by Beza and Scrivener. Erasmus’ original reading is supported by codex Θ and Theophylact. The evidence is in favor of the removal of this word from the Greek text. Therefore, the Greek text and the translation have been corrected to reflect the reading in the NA-Text and the M-Text.     

[9] NA-Text reads “multitude”.

[10] NA-Text omits “answering”.
