Chapter 14
1. ην δε το πασχα και τα
αζυμα μετα δυο ημερας και εζητουν οι αρχιερεις και οι γραμματεις πως αυτον εν
δολω κρατησαντες αποκτεινωσιν It was now two days before the Passover
and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and the scribes were
seeking how they might seize him by deception and kill him. |
2. ελεγον δε μη εν τη εορτη
μηποτε θορυβος εσται του λαου But[1]
they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be a riot among the people.” |
3. και οντος αυτου εν
βηθανια εν τη οικια σιμωνος του λεπρου κατακειμενου αυτου ηλθεν γυνη εχουσα
αλαβαστρον μυρου ναρδου πιστικης πολυτελους και συντριψασα το[2]
αλαβαστρον κατεχεεν αυτου κατα[3] της
κεφαλης And while he was at Bethany, in the
house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came having an
alabaster box of ointment of pure nard—very costly. And[4]
breaking the alabaster box, she poured it over his head. |
4. ησαν δε τινες
αγανακτουντες προς εαυτους και λεγοντες[5] εις
τι η απωλεια αυτη του μυρου γεγονεν But there were some who were indignant
among themselves, and said, “Why has this waste of the ointment been made? |
5. ηδυνατο γαρ τουτο το μυρον
πραθηναι επανω τριακοσιων δηναριων και δοθηναι τοις πτωχοις και ενεβριμωντο
αυτη For this ointment[6]
might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the
poor.” So, they were scolding her. |
6. ο δε ιησους ειπεν αφετε
αυτην τι αυτη κοπους παρεχετε καλον εργον ειργασατο[7] εν εμοι[8] But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do
you trouble her? She has done a good work for me. |
7. παντοτε γαρ τους πτωχους
εχετε μεθ εαυτων και οταν θελητε δυνασθε αυτους[9] ευ
ποιησαι εμε δε ου παντοτε εχετε For you always have the poor with you, and whenever
you want, you can do them good. But you will not always have me. |
8. ο εσχεν[10] αυτη[11]
εποιησεν προελαβεν μυρισαι μου το σωμα εις τον ενταφιασμον She has done what she could. She has anointed my
body beforehand for burial. |
9. Αμην δε[12] λεγω υμιν οπου εαν[13] κηρυχθη το ευαγγελιον τουτο εις ολον τον κοσμον και ο εποιησεν αυτη λαληθησεται εις μνημοσυνον αυτης Truly I say to you, wherever this[14] gospel is preached in the
whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of for a memorial
of her.” |
[1] NA-Text reads “For”.
[2] NA-Text reads “την” (feminine instead of
neuter).
[3] NA-Text omits “κατα” (over).
[4] NA-Text omits “And”.
[5] NA-Text omits “and said”
[6] NA-Text and Vg-St add
“ointment”, which is supported by codices א, A, B, C, D, K, L, U, W, Δ,
Π, Ψ, both families of
manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, old Latin, the Sahidic
Coptic, Origen and Bede. The omission is supported by codices E, F, G, H, M, S,
V, X, Γ, minuscules 22, 157, the Byzantine manuscripts, the old Latin codices
itc and itk the Peshitta, the Bohairic Coptic, the Gothic
version and Theophylact. This word has to be adopted in this text, because the
evidence shows that it cannot be in Matthew 26:9 and here at the same time. As
the evidence was on the side of the non-inclusion in Matthew, it is on the side
of the inclusion here. The Greek text and the translation have been adjusted
following the NA-Text.
[7] NA-Text reads “ηργασατο”, same verbal tense spelled differently.
[8] NA-Text, M-Text, WPF35
and PT read “εν εμοι”, which is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ (ενε εμοι) and Theophylact. The Greek text has been corrected
accordingly.
[9] NA-Text reads “αυτοις” (dative instead of accusative).
[10] NA-Text, M-Text, WPF35
and PT read “εσχεν” (second aorist instead of
imperfect), which is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Theophylact. The Greek text has been corrected accordingly.
[11] NA-Text omits “αυτη”.
[12] NA-Text and M-Text (Hodges-Farstad text only) add “δε” (and), which is supported by codices א, B, D, part of the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The omission is supported by codex Θ and part of the Byzantine manuscripts. This conjunction may have been missed by visual homoieoarcton in some transmission lines (ΔΕ ΛΕΓW, thus missing “And”). It has been added to the Greek text and kept silent in the translation, following the NA-Text and the M-Text.
[13] NA-Text and M-Text reads “εαν”, which is supported by codices א, B, Θ and the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by codex D and
Theophylact. The support for “εαν” is better. The Greek text has then
been adjusted accordingly.
[14] NA-Text omits “this” and renders “the gospel”.
