Mark 10:1-12 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 10



1. και εκειθεν[1] αναστας ερχεται εις τα ορια της ιουδαιας δια του περαν του ιορδανου και συμπορευονται παλιν οχλοι προς αυτον και ως ειωθει παλιν εδιδασκεν αυτους

And arising from there, he came to the region of Judea by[2] the other side of the Jordan. And multitudes gathered to him again. And, as he usually did, he was again teaching them.

2. και προσελθοντες [3] φαρισαιοι επηρωτων[4] αυτον ει εξεστιν ανδρι γυναικα απολυσαι πειραζοντες αυτον

And tempting him, the Pharisees came and asked him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

3. ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν αυτοις τι υμιν ενετειλατο μωσης[5]

And answering, he said to them, “What did Moses command you?”

4. οι δε ειπον[6] μωσης επετρεψεν βιβλιον αποστασιου γραψαι και απολυσαι

And they said, “Moses allowed a certificate of divorce to be written and to divorce her.”

5. και αποκριθεις ο ιησους ειπεν αυτοις προς την σκληροκαρδιαν υμων εγραψεν υμιν την εντολην ταυτην

And answering, Jesus said to them, “For your hardness of heart, he wrote you this commandment.

6. απο δε αρχης κτισεως αρσεν και θηλυ εποιησεν αυτους ο θεος

But from the beginning of the creation, God[7] made them male and female.

7. ενεκεν τουτου καταλειψει ανθρωπος τον πατερα αυτου και την μητερα και προσκολληθησεται προς την γυναικα αυτου

For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife[8],

8. και εσονται οι δυο εις σαρκα μιαν ωστε ουκετι εισιν δυο αλλα μια σαρξ

and the two will become one flesh, so that they are no longer two but one flesh.

9. ο ουν ο θεος συνεζευξεν ανθρωπος μη χωριζετω

What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

10. και εν τη οικια[9] παλιν οι μαθηται αυτου[10] περι του αυτου επηρωτησαν[11] αυτον

And in the house, his disciples asked him again about the same matter.

11. και λεγει αυτοις ος εαν[12] απολυση την γυναικα αυτου και γαμηση αλλην μοιχαται επ αυτην

And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.

12. και εαν γυνη απολυση[13] τον ανδρα αυτης και[14] γαμηθη[15] αλλω[16] μοιχαται

And if a woman[17] divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”



[1] NA-Text and P-Text read “και εκειθεν”. The uncontracted form is supported by codices א, B, D and Θ. The contracted one is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The text has then been adjusted following the NA-Text.

[2] NA-Text reads “and”.

[3] NA-Text, WPF35 and M-Text omit the definite article “οι”. This article is omitted by codices A, B, E, F, G, H, K, L, Γ, Δ, Π, Ψ, family of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscules 28, 180, 597, 700, 892, 1006, 1010, 1079, 1292, 1505, 1546, 1646 and 2427. The inclusion is supported by codices א, C, N, X, W, Θ, Σ, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 13, 157, 565, 579, 828, 1009, 1071, 1195, 1216, 1230, 1241, 1242, 1243, 1253, 1342, 1344, 1365, 1424, 2148, 2174 and Theophylact. The same instability is found in the parallel passage in Matthew 19:3. There is some risk of loss of the article caused by a parableptic error (οι φαρισαιοι, thus missing the definite article), but the inclusion here is more likely the product of a natural addition to the text given the constant use of the article with the word “Pharisees” (see verses 2:16, 2:18, 24, 3:6, 7:1, 3, 5, 8:11, 15 and 12:13). The article has then been removed from the text following the NA-Text and the M-Text.

[4] NA-Text and VgSt read “επηρωτων” (imperfect instead of aorist, Latin equivalent: “interrogabant”). The imperfect is supported by codices א, B, D, and Θ. The aorist is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The verbal tense has been adjusted following the NA-Text.

[5] NA-Text reads “μωυσης”. Also, in verse 4.

[6] NA-Text reads “ειπαν”. Same verbal tense spelled differently.

[7] NA-Text omits “God”. The removal of the sacred name in Egyptian manuscripts is due to harmonization to Matthew 19:4. The Diatessaron should not be cited as a witness for the omission, because Tatian added here the text from Matthew 19:4 that omits “God”.

[8] NA-Text brackets “and be joined to his wife”. The collective witness of the majuscules, minuscules and the versions is overwhelmingly against questioning this clause as part of the word of God. This omission is most certainly a scribal error caused by parablepsis in some Alexandrian majuscules (και προσκολληθησεται προς την γυναικα αυτου και, thus missing “and will be joined to his wife”).

[9] NA-Text and P-Text read “εις την οικιαν” (accusative instead of dative), which is supported by codices א, B and D (και ει εις τιν οικιαν). The dative is supported by codex Θ, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. Mark uses both forms.

[10] NA-Text and P-Text omit the pronoun and render “the disciples”, which is supported by codices א, B, C, L, Δ, Θ, the Armenian and the Coptic versions. The inclusion is supported by codices A, D, N, X, Γ, Π, the Byzantine manuscripts, the Diatessaron and Theophylact. Both are well supported.

[11] NA-Text and P-Text read “τουτου επηρωτων” and renders “the disciples were asking him about this”, which is supported by codices א, B, C, L and Δ. The TR is supported by codices A, D, N, X, Γ and Π. Both forms are well supported.

[12] NA-Text and P-Text read “αν”, which is supported by codices א, B and D. The TR is supported by codex Θ, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. No need of correction.

[13] NA-Text reads “απολυσασα” (participle instead of subjunctive)

[14] NA-Text omits “και” (and).

[15] NA-Text reads “γαμηση” (active instead of passive)

[16] NA-Text omits “αλλον” (accusative instead of dative).

[17] NA-Text reads “she”
