The gospel according to Matthew
Chapter 7
[1] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “δε” (and): א B 0250 565 1424 syrp syrc copsa(mss) copmae Justin (Dialogue with Trypho, chapter 35) Chrysostom (homily 23) Jerome Augustine (letter 44:2:4) Bede Diatessaron | TR: C K L W Δ Θ ƒ1 ƒ13 33 579 700 892 1241 Byz itf itq syrh copsa(mss) copbo Theophylact. The conjunction could have been lost by visual homoeoteleuton (προσεχετε δε, thus missing “and”) or naturally added once it occurs 485 times in the gospel of Matthew. It is not safe to remove the conjunction from the Greek text. [2] NA-Text and Vg-St read “σταφυλας”, literally “grapes” instead of “grape” (Latin equivalent: “uvas”): א B 0250 ƒ1 892 syrh cop | TR: C K L W Δ Θ ƒ13 565 579 700 1241 1424 Byz Theophylact. The Alexandrian text is likely showing a scribal conformation to the parallel “figs” in the verse. Harmonization to Luke 6:44 in the Byzantine text is less likely once the Lukan phrase was not imported into the gospel of Matthew. [3] NA-Text adds “τοις”. [4] NA-Text reads “επροφητευσαμεν”,
just a spelling difference, but meaning the same thing. |
