The gospel according to Matthew
Chapter 11
And it happened that when Jesus had
finished instructing his twelve disciples, he departed from there to teach
and preach in their cities. |
ἔργα τοῦ χριστοῦ πέμψας διὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ Now when John heard in the prison about
the works of Christ, he sent word by[1]
his disciples |
προσδοκῶμεν; and said to him, “Are you the one who
is to come, or should we wait for another?” |
Πορευθέντες ἀπαγγείλατε Ἰωάννῃ ἃ ἀκούετε καὶ βλέπετε· And answering, Jesus said to them, “Go and tell John what you
hear and see: |
εὐαγγελίζονται. the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, the
lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear [2], the dead are raised up
and the poor have the gospel preached to them. |
And blessed is he who is not offended because of
me.” |

Theophylact. Internal evidence suggests harmonization to Luke 7:19 when scribes
believed that “δια” was a miscopy of the “δυο” from the parallel passage. “δια”
has also early and widespread attestation and is the harder reading. Greek text
adjusted. Following the NRV, “word” has been added to the text for
clarification purposes.
[2] NA-Text adds “and”. This addition is suggestive of a scribal intrusion
in the text by interrupting the eloquence of Matthew as he elegantly put
together two pairs of miracles each separated by “and”.
