Matthew 9:14-26 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Matthew

Chapter 9



14. Τότε προσέρχονται αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου λέγοντες, Διὰ τί ἡμεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι νηστεύομεν πολλά, οἱ δὲ μαθηταί σου οὐ νηστεύουσιν;

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often[1], but your disciples do not fast?”

15. Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Μὴ δύνανται οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος πενθεῖν ἐφʼ ὅσον μετʼ αὐτῶν ἐστιν ὁ νυμφίος; λεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι ὅταν ἀπαρθῇ ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ὁ νυμφίος, καὶ τότε νηστεύσουσιν.

And Jesus said to them, “Can the sons of the bridechamber mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

16. Οὐδεὶς δὲ ἐπιβάλλει ἐπίβλημα ῥάκους ἀγνάφου ἐπὶ ἱματίῳ παλαιῷ, αἴρει γὰρ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἱματίου, καὶ χεῖρον σχίσμα γίνεται.

No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made.  

17. Οὐδὲ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς, εἰ δὲ μήγε ῥήγνυνται οἱ ἀσκοί καὶ ὁ οἶνος ἐκχεῖται καὶ οἱ ἀσκοὶ ἀπολοῦνται[2]. λλὰ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς καινούς, καὶ ἀμφότεροι[3] συντηροῦνται.

Neither do they pour new wine into old wineskins, otherwise the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

18. Ταῦτα αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος αὐτοῖς, ἰδοὺ, ἄρχων εἷς ἐλθὼν προσεκύνει αὐτῷ, λέγων ὅτι Ἡ θυγάτηρ μου ἄρτι ἐτελεύτησεν, ἀλλὰ ἐλθὼν ἐπίθες τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐπʼ αὐτήν, καὶ ζήσεται.

While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”

19. Καὶ ἐγερθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ.

And Jesus arose and followed him, and so did his disciples.

20. Καὶ ἰδοὺ, γυνὴ αἱμορροοῦσα δώδεκα ἔτη προσελθοῦσα ὄπισθεν ἥψατο τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ,

And behold, a woman who had been suffering from a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the fringe of his garment,

21. ἔλεγεν γὰρ ἐν ἑαυτῇ, Ἐὰν μόνον ἅψωμαι τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ, σωθήσομαι.

for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be healed.”

22. Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐπιστραφεὶς[4] καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν εἶπεν, Θάρσει, θύγατερ. πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε. Καὶ ἐσώθη ἡ γυνὴ ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης.

But turning and seeing her, Jesus said, “Daughter, be of good cheer! Your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that hour.

23. Καὶ ἐλθὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἄρχοντος καὶ ἰδὼν τοὺς αὐλητὰς καὶ τὸν ὄχλον θορυβούμενον,

When Jesus came into the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a tumult,

24. λέγει[5] αὐτοῖς Ἀναχωρεῖτε, οὐ γὰρ ἀπέθανεν τὸ κοράσιον, ἀλλὰ καθεύδει. Καὶ κατεγέλων αὐτοῦ.

he said to them[6], “Go back, for the girl is not dead, but sleeps.” And they ridiculed him.

25. Ὃτε δὲ ἐξεβλήθη ὁ ὄχλος, εἰσελθὼν ἐκράτησεν τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς, καὶ ἠγέρθη τὸ κοράσιον.

But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in, took her by the hand, and the girl arose.

26. Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἡ φήμη αὕτη εἰς ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἐκείνην.

And the news of this went out into all that land.



[1] NA-Text brackets “often”.

[2] NA-Text reads “απολλυνται” (present passive instead of future middle voice).

[3] NA-Text, WPF35, P-Text and M-Text read “αμφοτεροι” (nominative) “αμφοτερα” (accusative). Even though Theophylact reads like the TR, the Byzantine compilations along with the NA-Text represent a better array of evidence when it comes to grammar than the Greek text available to Theophylact. Scrivener also states that “αμφοτεροι” is the true reading here. Text adjusted.

[4] NA-Text reads “στραφεις”, which can also mean “turning”.

[5] NA-Text reads “ελεγεν” (imperfect instead of present). The Greek text of Chrysostom supports the NA-Text.

[6] Or: “he said” by omitting “to them” (NA-Text and Vg-St): א B D ƒ1 ƒ13 33 892 cop Chrysostom | TR: C K L N W Γ Δ Θ 565 579 700 1424 itf itg1 syr Theophylact || both forms are well supported and viable here.
