Matthew 10:26-33 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Matthew

Chapter 10

26. Μὴ οὖν φοβηθῆτε αὐτούς, οὐδὲν γάρ ἐστιν κεκαλυμμένον ὃ οὐκ ἀποκαλυφθήσεται, καὶ κρυπτὸν ὃ οὐ γνωσθήσεται.

Therefore do not fear them, for there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.

27. Ὃ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ, εἴπατε ἐν τῷ φωτί, καὶ ὃ εἰς τὸ οὖς ἀκούετε, κηρύξατε ἐπὶ τῶν δωμάτων.

What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light, and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim on the housetops.

28. Καὶ μὴ φοβηθῆτε[1] ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποκτεννόντων[2] τὸ σῶμα τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν μὴ δυναμένων ἀποκτεῖναι. Φοβηθῆτε δὲ μᾶλλον τὸν δυνάμενον καὶ [3] ψυχὴν καὶ [4] σῶμα ἀπολέσαι ἐν γεέννῃ.

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

29. Οὐχὶ δύο στρουθία ἀσσαρίου πωλεῖται; Καὶ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐ πεσεῖται ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἄνευ τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν.

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.

30. Ὑμῶν δὲ καὶ αἱ τρίχες τῆς κεφαλῆς πᾶσαι ἠριθμημέναι εἰσίν.

And even the hairs of your head are all numbered.

31. Μὴ οὖν φοβεῖσθε[5], πολλῶν στρουθίων διαφέρετε ὑμεῖς.

Therefore do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows.

32. Πᾶς οὖν ὅστις ὁμολογήσει ἐν ἐμοὶ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ὁμολογήσω κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτῷ ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν [6] οὐρανοῖς.

Therefore, everyone who confesses me before men, I will also confess him before my Father who is in heaven.

33. ὅστις δ᾽ ἂν ἀρνήσηταί με ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ἀρνήσομαι αὐτὸν κἀγὼ ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν [7] οὐρανοῖς.

But whoever denies me before men, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven.

[1] NA-Text, M-Text and Vg-St read “φοβεισθε” (present, Latin equivalent: “timere”) instead of “φοβηθητε” (aorist): א C K L Γ Δ f13 565 700 1010 Byz | TR: B D N W Θ ƒ1 28 33 892 1424 Theophylact. The M-Text agrees with the TR against the NA-Text in the second occurrence of the verb. The manuscript tradition is divided on the right tense of this verb. Both forms are used by Matthew.

[2] NA-Text and P-Text read “αποκτεννοντων”: א C D U W Δ ƒ1 33 700* 892. M-Text and WPF35 read “αποκτενοντων”: L N ƒ13 28 157 565 579 700c 1071 1474 | TR: B 372 2737 Theophylact || The support for the NA-Text is more widespread and has been adopted in the Greek text.

[3] M-Text and P-Text add the definite article “την”. A possible harmonization to the previous occurrence of “the soul” within the verse. Theophylact, the NA-Text and WPF35 agree with the TR.

[4] M-Text adds the definite article “το”. A possible harmonization to the previous occurrence of “the body” within the verse. Theophylact, the NA-Text, the P-Text and WPF35 agree with the TR.

[5] NA-Text and Vg-St read “φοβεισθε” (present, Latin equivalent: “timere”) instead of “φοβηθητε” (aorist): א (φοβισθε) B D L W ƒ1 892 | TR: C Θ ƒ13 Byz Theophylact || Matthew uses both forms, but as the support is better for the NA-Text and the verbal tense in verse 28 is in the aorist, suggesting internal harmonization in the TR, the verbal tense has been adjusted to the Alexandrian reading.

[6] NA-Text adds in brackets the definite article “τοις” before “heaven”.

[7] NA-Text adds in brackets the definite article “τοις” before “heaven”.
