Chapter 10
34. Μὴ νομίσητε ὅτι
ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν. Οὐκ ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην, ἀλλὰ μάχαιραν.
“Do
not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace,
but a sword.

35. Ἦλθον
γὰρ διχάσαι ἄνθρωπον κατὰ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ θυγατέρα κατὰ τῆς μητρὸς
αὐτῆς, καὶ νύμφην κατὰ τῆς πενθερᾶς αὐτῆς.
For I came to set a man against his father, and a
daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

36. Καὶ ἐχθροὶ τοῦ
ἀνθρώπου οἱ οἰκιακοὶ αὐτοῦ.
And a man’s enemies will be those of his own
household.

37. Ὁ
φιλῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος, καὶ ὁ φιλῶν υἱὸν ἢ
θυγατέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος.
He
who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and he who loves
son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

38. Καὶ ὃς οὐ λαμβάνει
τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκολουθεῖ ὀπίσω μου, οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος.
And
he who does not take his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.

39. Ὁ
εὑρὼν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἀπολέσει αὐτήν, καὶ ὁ ἀπολέσας τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἕνεκεν
ἐμοῦ εὑρήσει αὐτήν.
He
who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake will
find it.

40. Ὁ δεχόμενος ὑμᾶς
ἐμὲ δέχεται, καὶ ὁ ἐμὲ δεχόμενος δέχεται τὸν ἀποστείλαντά με.
“He
who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent
me.

41. Ὁ δεχόμενος
προφήτην εἰς ὄνομα προφήτου μισθὸν προφήτου λήψεται, καὶ
ὁ δεχόμενος δίκαιον εἰς ὄνομα δικαίου μισθὸν δικαίου λήψεται.
He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet
will receive a prophet’s reward, and he who receives a righteous man in the
name of a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.

42. καὶ ὃς ἐὰν ποτίσῃ
ἕνα τῶν μικρῶν τούτων ποτήριον ψυχροῦ μόνον εἰς ὄνομα μαθητοῦ, ἀμὴν λέγω
ὑμῖν, οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσῃ τὸν μισθὸν αὐτοῦ.
And whoever gives one of these little ones even a
cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, truly, I say to you, he
will by no means lose his reward.”

M-Text and WPF35 read “οικειακοι” (a noun instead of an adjective): Chrysostom
(homily 35 on the gospel of Matthew) | TR: א B Theophylact || Both readings are viable. No need
of correction.
NA-Text reads “λημψεται”,
a different spelling for the same word. Tregelles stated that “we must follow
the old copies, in the rusticity of sound, and write λημψεται” (An account of the printed
text of the Greek New Testament, pg. 209). Scrivener also preferred the
Alexandrian spelling. But this is not necessarily the earlier spelling for this
word before it got allegedly smoothed out by late Byzantine scribes. Clement of
Alexandria quoted this verse in the 100’s in Egypt, in two different works,
using the Byzantine spelling for this word (Who is the Rich Man That Shall Be
Saved? ch.31, The Stromata book 4 ch.6).
NA-Text reads “αν”,
a different spelling for the same word.
