Chapter 17
1. ειπεν
δε προς τους μαθητας αυτου[1] ανενδεκτον εστιν του μη
ελθειν τα σκανδαλα ουαι δε[2] δι ου ερχεται And he said to his disciples, “It is impossible that stumbling blocks should not come,
but woe to him through whom they come! |
2. λυσιτελει
αυτω ει μυλος ονικος[3] περικειται περι τον
τραχηλον αυτου και ερριπται εις την θαλασσαν η ινα σκανδαλιση ενα των μικρων
τουτων It
would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were
cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to
stumble. |
3. προσεχετε
εαυτοις εαν δε[4] αμαρτη ο αδελφος σου
επιτιμησον αυτω και εαν μετανοηση αφες αυτω Take
heed to yourselves. If your brother sins [5], rebuke him. And if he
repents, forgive him. |
4. και
εαν επτακις της ημερας αμαρτη[6] εις σε και επτακις της
ημερας επιστρεψη προς σε λεγων μετανοω αφησεις αυτω If
he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day[7] returns to you[8], saying, ‘I repent,’ you
shall forgive him.” |

ειπον[9] οι αποστολοι τω κυριω
προσθες ημιν πιστιν And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” |
6. ειπεν
δε ο κυριος ει εχετε[10] πιστιν ως κοκκον
σιναπεως ελεγετε αν τη συκαμινω ταυτη[11] εκριζωθητι και φυτευθητι
εν τη θαλασση και υπηκουσεν αν υμιν And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you
would tell this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea,’ and
it would obey you. |
7. τις
δε εξ υμων δουλον εχων αροτριωντα η ποιμαινοντα ος εισελθοντι εκ του αγρου
ερει [12] ευθεως παρελθων αναπεσε[13] But
which of you, having a servant plowing or keeping sheep, will say when he
comes in from the field, ‘Come immediately and recline at the table’? |
8. αλλ
ουχι ερει αυτω ετοιμασον τι δειπνησω και περιζωσαμενος διακονει μοι εως φαγω
και πιω και μετα ταυτα φαγεσαι και πιεσαι συ Will
he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare my supper, clothe yourself properly, and
serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you shall eat and drink’? |
9. μη
χαριν εχει τω δουλω εκεινω[14] οτι εποιησεν τα
διαταχθεντα [15] ου δοκω Does
he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded? I think
not[16]. |
10. ουτως
και υμεις οταν ποιησητε παντα τα διαταχθεντα υμιν λεγετε οτι δουλοι αχρειοι
εσμεν οτι[17] ο ωφειλομεν[18] ποιησαι πεποιηκαμεν So
you also, when you have done all the things that are commanded you, say, ‘We
are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’” |

“αυτου” (Latin equivalent: “suos”) and render “his
disciples”, which is supported by codices א, A, B and D. The omission
is supported by codex Θ and
Theophylact. The pronoun has been adopted in the Greek text.
[2] NA-Text reads “πλην”,
which can also mean “but”.
[3] NA-Text reads “λιθος μυλικος”. Same meaning.
[4] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “δε”. This omission is
supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Clement of Alexandria. The
inclusion is supported by codex A and Theophylact. The omission is well
supported, but not safe because it could have been removed for being considered
superfluous in the text.
[5] NA-Text and Vg-St omit
“against you”. This omission is supported by codices א, A, B,
L, W, Θ, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 205, 892, 1071, 1241, the old Latin
codices ita, itaur, itb, itf, itff2,
iti, itl, itλ, the Curetonian Syriac, the
Syriac Sinaiticus, the Peshitta, the Harklean Syriac, the Palestinian Syriac,
the Sahidic Coptic, the Bohairic Coptic, the Armenian, the Georgian1,
the Slavic version, the Diatessaron, Clement of Alexandria and Basil. The
inclusion is supported by codices D, E, F, G, H, N, Ψ, Δ, family
of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscules 28, 157, 180, 565, 579, 597, 700, 1006,
1010, 1243, 1292, 1342, 1424, 1505, the Byzantine manuscripts, the old Latin
codices itc, itd, ite, itq, itr1,
some manuscripts of the Bohairic Coptic version, the Ethiopic, the Georgian2
version, Ambrose, Augustine and Theophylact. The non-inclusion is very well
supported by a diversity of Greek manuscripts and the versions. The inclusion
here is likely a harmonization to verse 4 and Matthew 18:5 or a clarification
based on verse 4. Those words have been removed from the text, following the
NA-Text.
[6] NA-Text reads “αμαρτηση”
(aorist instead of second aorist).
[7] NA-Text omits “in a day”
[8] M-Text and WPF35
omit “to you”. NA-Text and Vg-St read “προς σε” (Latin equivalent: “ad te”)
instead of “επι σε”, which is supported by codices א, A, B, D, L, Ψ, family of manuscripts ƒ1,
minuscules 579, 892, 1241, 2542, the old Latin codices, the Syriac versions, the Diatessaron and
Clement of Alexandria. The omission is supported by codices W, Θ, family of manuscripts ƒ13, the
Byzantine manuscripts, the old Latin codices itf, iti and
itλ. The preposition of the NA-Text is well supported and has been
adopted in the text.
[9] NA-Text reads “ειπαν”.
Same verbal tense, different spelling.
[10] NA-Text, P-Text and M-Text
read “εχετε” (present instead of imperfect), which is supported
by papyrus 75, codices א, A, B, Θ and
part of the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by codex D, part of the
Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The present tense is well supported and has
been adopted in the Greek text.
[11] NA-Text brackets “ταυτη”.
[12] NA-Text and Vg-St add “αυτω” (“to
him”, Latin equivalent: “illi”), which is supported by codices א, B, D and Θ. The omission
is supported by codex A, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. This
pronoun in the Alexandrian text is well supported.
[13] NA-Text, P-Text, WPF35
and M-Text read “αναπεσε” (second aorist instead of aorist), which is
supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and
the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by codex A and Theophylact. The spelling
has been adjusted to conform to the second aorist found in the NA-Text and the
M-Text.
[14] NA-Text omits “εκεινω”
and renders “the servant”, which is possibly due to a scribal error caused
by visual homoeuteleuton (δουλω εκεινω, thus
missing “that”).
[15] NA-Text, P-Text, WPF35
and M-Text omit “αυτω” (him), which is supported by codices A, E, F, G, H, N, W,
Δ, Θ, Π, Ψ, 063, minuscules 180,
565, 579, 597, 700, 892, 1006, 1009, 1010, 1071, 1079, 1195, 1216, 1230, 1242, 1243,
1253, 1292, 1342, 1344, 1365, 1424, 1505, 1546, 1646, 2148, 2174, the Byzantine
manuscripts, the old Latin codices itc, its, the Harklean Syriac and the Gothic
version. The inclusion is supported by codex D, family of manuscripts ƒ13, the
old Latin codices itaur, itb, itd, itf,
itff2, iti, itl, itq, itr1,
the Peshitta, the Georgian2 version, the Arabic Diatessaron, Augustine
and Theophylact. The addition of the pronoun is likely an addition to the text
by mimicking the pronoun found after the same verb in the same verbal tense in
verse 10. It has been removed from the Greek text and the translation,
following the NA-Text and the M-Text.
[16] NA-Text omits “I think not”,
which is likely due to a scribal error caused by parablepsis (ου δοκω ουτως, thus missing “I think not”).
[17] NA-Text omits “οτι”, possibly
due to a parableptic error (οτι ο, thus missing “οτι”) or
removed to avoid superfluity.
[18] M-TextRP reads “οφειλομεν”
(present instead of imperfect), which is supported by part of the Byzantine
manuscripts. The TR is supported by papyrus 75, codices א
(ωφειλαμεν), A, B, D (ωφιλομεν), Θ, part of the Byzantine manuscripts and
Theophylact. The reading found in the TR has evidently preserved the original
reading.
