Chapter 12
35. εστωσαν
υμων αι οσφυες περιεζωσμεναι και οι λυχνοι καιομενοι “Let
your loins be girded and your lamps burning. |
36. και
υμεις ομοιοι ανθρωποις προσδεχομενοις τον κυριον εαυτων ποτε αναλυση[1] εκ των γαμων ινα
ελθοντος και κρουσαντος ευθεως ανοιξωσιν αυτω And
be like men watching for their lord when he returns from the wedding, that
when he comes and knocks, they may immediately open to him. |
37. μακαριοι
οι δουλοι εκεινοι ους ελθων ο κυριος ευρησει γρηγορουντας αμην λεγω υμιν οτι
περιζωσεται και ανακλινει αυτους και παρελθων διακονησει αυτοις Blessed
are those servants whom the lord will find watching when he comes. Truly I
say to you that he will gird himself and make them recline, and coming up he
will serve them. |
38. και
εαν ελθη εν τη δευτερα φυλακη και εν τη τριτη φυλακη ελθη και ευρη ουτως
μακαριοι εισιν οι δουλοι[2] εκεινοι And
if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch[3], and find them so, blessed
are those servants. |
39. τουτο
δε γινωσκετε οτι ει ηδει ο οικοδεσποτης ποια ωρα ο κλεπτης ερχεται
εγρηγορησεν αν και ουκ αν αφηκεν διορυγηναι[4] τον οικον αυτου But
know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief
was coming, he would have watched[5] and not allowed his house
to be broken into. |
40. και
υμεις ουν γινεσθε ετοιμοι οτι η ωρα ου δοκειτε ο υιος του ανθρωπου ερχεται Therefore[6] be ready also, for the Son
of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” |
41. ειπεν
δε αυτω ο πετρος κυριε προς ημας την παραβολην ταυτην λεγεις η και προς
παντας And Peter said to him[7],
“Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everybody?” |
42. ειπεν
δε[8] ο κυριος τις αρα εστιν ο
πιστος οικονομος και[9] φρονιμος ον καταστησει ο
κυριος επι της θεραπειας αυτου του διδοναι εν καιρω το[10] σιτομετριον And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his
lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food in due
season? |
43. μακαριος
ο δουλος εκεινος ον ελθων ο κυριος αυτου ευρησει ποιουντα ουτως Blessed
is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes. |
44. αληθως
λεγω υμιν οτι επι πασιν τοις υπαρχουσιν αυτου καταστησει αυτον Truly
I say to you that he will set him over all his possessions. |
45. εαν
δε ειπη ο δουλος εκεινος εν τη καρδια αυτου χρονιζει ο κυριος μου ερχεσθαι
και αρξηται τυπτειν τους παιδας και τας παιδισκας εσθιειν τε και πινειν και
μεθυσκεσθαι But
if that servant says in his heart, ‘My lord is delaying his coming,’ and
begins to beat the male servants and female servants, and to eat and drink
and be drunk, |
46. ηξει
ο κυριος του δουλου εκεινου εν ημερα η ου προσδοκα και εν ωρα η ου γινωσκει
και διχοτομησει αυτον και το μερος αυτου μετα των απιστων θησει the
lord of that servant will come in a day when he does not expect and in an
hour that he does not know, and will cut him in two, and put him with the unbelievers. |
47. εκεινος
δε ο δουλος ο γνους το θελημα του κυριου αυτου[11] και μη ετοιμασας μηδε[12] ποιησας προς το θελημα
αυτου δαρησεται πολλας And
that servant who knew his lord’s will, and did not prepare nor do according
to his will, will be beaten with many stripes, |
48. ο
δε μη γνους ποιησας δε αξια πληγων δαρησεται ολιγας παντι δε ω εδοθη πολυ
πολυ ζητηθησεται παρ αυτου και ω παρεθεντο πολυ περισσοτερον αιτησουσιν αυτον but
he who did not know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with
few stripes. Everyone to whom much is given, of him will much be required,
and to whom much was entrusted, of him they will ask the more. |
[1] NA-Text and M-Text read “αναλυση”
(aorist subjunctive instead of future indicative), which is supported by
codices א, A, B, D, Θ and
part of the Byzantine manuscriptsvid. The TR is supported by part of
the Byzantine manuscriptsvid and Theophylact. The support for the
aorist subjunctive is much better and has been adopted in the Greek text.
[2] NA-Text omits “οι
δουλοι” and renders
literally “blessed are those”. This omission is in all likelihood a scribal
error caused by parablepsis (οι δουλοι εκεινοι, thus missing “servants”).
Codex Sinaiticus missed all three words due to parablepsis, too.
[3] NA-Text reads “And if in
the second and if in the third watch he should come”.
[4] NA-Text reads “διορυχθηναι” (aorist instead of second aorist).
[5] NA-Text omits “he would
have watched”. The collective witness of the majuscules, including codex
Vaticanus and a correction in codex Sinaiticus, the minuscules and the versions
is unmistakenly against this omission, which was likely caused by visual
homoeoteleuton (ερχεται εγρηγορησεν αν και, thus missing “he would have watched”).
[6] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “Therefore”,
which is supported by papyrus 75, codices א, B, L, Q, Θ, Ψ, 070, minuscules
579, 1241, 2542, the Syriac Sinaiticus and the Curetonian Syriac. The inclusion
is supported by codices A, (D), N, W, Δ, family of manuscripts ƒ13,
minuscules 33, 565, 700, 892, the Byzantine manuscripts, the Peshitta, the Harklean
Syriac version and Theophylact. This omission is suspicious because it
appears in the parallel passage in Matthew 24:44, which reads Luke 12:40 verbatim
from “και υμεις” on until the of the verse.
[7] NA-Text omits “to him”.
[8] NA-Text reads “και” and
places it at the beginning of the verse. Same meaning.
[9] NA-Text reads “ο” and
renders “faithful steward, the wise one whom”.
[10] NA-Text brackets “το”.
[11] NA-Text and WPF35
read “αυτου”, which is supported by papyrus 45, codices א, B, D, Θ, part
of the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The TR is supported by codex A and
part of the Byzantine manuscripts. The text has been corrected following the
NA-Text, which is very well supported.
[12] NA-Text reads “η” (or).
