Chapter 11
24. οταν το ακαθαρτον πνευμα
εξελθη απο του ανθρωπου διερχεται δι ανυδρων τοπων ζητουν αναπαυσιν και μη
ευρισκον [1] λεγει
υποστρεψω εις τον οικον μου οθεν εξηλθον When the unclean spirit has gone out of the man, he passes
through dry places, seeking rest. And finding none, he says, ‘I will return
to my house from which I came out.’ |
25. και ελθον ευρισκει
σεσαρωμενον και κεκοσμημενον And when he returns, he finds it swept and put in
order. |
26. τοτε πορευεται και
παραλαμβανει επτα ετερα πνευματα πονηροτερα εαυτου και εισελθοντα[2]
κατοικει εκει και γινεται τα εσχατα του ανθρωπου εκεινου χειρονα των πρωτων Then he goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked
than himself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that man
becomes worse than the first.” |
27. εγενετο δε εν τω λεγειν
αυτον ταυτα επαρασα τις γυνη φωνην εκ του οχλου ειπεν αυτω μακαρια η κοιλια η
βαστασασα σε και μαστοι ους εθηλασας And it happened, as he said these
things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice and said to
him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which nursed you!” |
28. αυτος δε ειπεν μενουνγε[3]
μακαριοι οι ακουοντες τον λογον του θεου και φυλασσοντες [4] But he said, “Blessed rather are those
who hear the word of God, and keep it.” |
29. των δε οχλων επαθροιζομενων ηρξατο λεγειν η γενεα αυτη γενεα[5] πονηρα εστιν σημειον επιζητει[6] και σημειον ου δοθησεται αυτη ει μη το σημειον ιωνα του προφητου And when the multitudes were gathering
together to him, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks after a sign,
but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet[7]. |
30. καθως γαρ εγενετο ιωνας
σημειον τοις νινευιταις ουτως εσται και ο υιος του ανθρωπου τη γενεα ταυτη For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so the
Son of Man will also be to this generation. |
31. βασιλισσα νοτου
εγερθησεται εν τη κρισει μετα των ανδρων της γενεας ταυτης και κατακρινει
αυτους οτι ηλθεν εκ των περατων της γης ακουσαι την σοφιαν σολομωνος[8] και
ιδου πλειον σολομωνος ωδε The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment
with the men of this generation and will condemn them, for she came from the
ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, one greater than
Solomon is here. |
32. ανδρες νινευιται[9]
αναστησονται εν τη κρισει μετα της γενεας ταυτης και κατακρινουσιν αυτην οτι
μετενοησαν εις το κηρυγμα ιωνα και ιδου πλειον ιωνα ωδε The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment
with this generation, and will condemn it, for they repented at the preaching
of Jonah. And behold, one greater than Jonah is here. |
33. ουδεις δε[10]
λυχνον αψας εις κρυπτην[11]
τιθησιν ουδε υπο τον μοδιον αλλ επι την λυχνιαν ινα οι εισπορευομενοι το
φεγγος[12]
βλεπωσιν “No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a cellar
or under a basket[13], but on a stand, that
those who come in may see the light. |
34. ο λυχνος του σωματος
εστιν ο οφθαλμος [14] οταν
ουν[15] ο
οφθαλμος σου απλους η και ολον το σωμα σου φωτεινον εστιν επαν δε πονηρος η
και το σωμα σου σκοτεινον The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore when your
eye is good, your whole body is also full of light. But when it is evil, your
body also is full of darkness. |
35. σκοπει ουν μη το φως το
εν σοι σκοτος εστιν Therefore take heed that the light which is in you
is not darkness. |
36. ει ουν το σωμα σου ολον
φωτεινον μη εχον τι μερος σκοτεινον εσται φωτεινον ολον ως οταν ο λυχνος τη
αστραπη φωτιζη σε Therefore if your whole body is full of light,
having no part dark, it will be wholly full of light, as when the bright
shining of a lamp gives you light.” |
[1] NA-Text adds within
brackets “τοτε” (then).
[2] M-Text and WPF35
read “ελθοντα”, which is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts.
The TR is supported by codices א, A, B, D, Θ, some Byzantine manuscripts
and Theophylact. The Byzantine verb is likely the result of a parableptic error
(εισελθοντα, thus missing “εισ”). The reading in the TR stands as the correct
reading.
[3] NA-Text reads “μενουν”.
Same word, different spelling.
[4] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “αυτον”,
which is supported by codices A, B, D and Θ. The omission
is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The pronoun was
added to the text to improve the reading of the verb followed by a pronoun. The
pronoun has been dropped from the Greek text, following the NA-Text.
[5] NA-Text, P-Text and Vg-St add
“γενεα” (Latin equivalent: “generatio”)
and render “This generation is an evil generation”, which is supported by
codices א, A, B, D and Θ. The omission is supported
by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. This word was omitted in the
Byzantine text to avoid the repetition of the same word twice. This word has
then been added to the text following the NA-Text.
[6] NA-Text and P-Text read “ζητει”, which is supported by papyrus 45vid, papyrus
75, codices א, A, B, L, Ξ, minuscules 700, 892 and 2542. The
TR is supported by codices C, D (επειζητει), W, Θ, Ψ, 070, both
families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minsucule 33, the Byzantine
manuscripts and Theophylact. The TR is very well supported and stands in no need
of correction.
[7] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “the prophet”. The Clementine vulgate disagrees with the vulgate of Stuttgart and so does the Complutensian Polyglot both in the Latin and the Greek columns. The omission is supported by papyri 45 and 75, codices א, B, D, L, Ξ, minuscules 700, 892*, 2542, the Sahidic Coptic, some manuscripts of the Bohairic Coptic version, Ambrose and Cyril of Alexandria. The TR is supported by codices A, C, W, Θ, Ψ, 070, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscule 33, the Byzantine manuscripts, the old Latin codices ite, itf, itq and itr1, the Peshitta, the Syriac Sinaiticus, the Harklean Syriac, the Bohairic Coptic version, the Diatessaron, Epiphanius and Theophylact. See footnote in Matthew 16:4, but notice that the omission in the Alexandrian text counts on a strong support here in Luke, which may suggest harmonization to Matthew 16:4 in the Byzantine text.
[8] NA-Text and M-Text read “σολομωνος”
(twice in the verse), which is supported by papyrus 45, codices א, A, B, D, Θ and the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by Theophylact. This
spelling has been adopted in the Greek text.
[9] NA-Text reads “νινευιται”
(nominative plural masculine instead of indeclinable proper name), which is
supported by papyrus 45, codices א, A, B, C, Θ, part of the Byzantine manuscripts and
Theophylact. This reading is well supported and has been adopted in the Greek
text.
[10] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “δε”, which is supported by papyrus 45, codices א, B and D. The inclusion is supported by codices A, Θ, the Byzantine
manuscripts and Theophlact. The Alexandrian omission of this conjunction is
well supported.
[11] NA-Text, P-Text, WPF35
and M-Text read “κρυπτην” (feminine instead of
neuter) and render “cellar” instead of “secret place”, which is supported by codices א, A, B, Θ and the Byzantine manuscripts.
The TR is supported by papyrus 45. The Greek text has been adjusted following
the NA-Text and the M-Text.
[12] NA-Text reads “φως”.
Those words are interchangeable.
[13] NA-Text brackets “or under
a basket”.
[14] NA-Text and Vg-St add “σου” (Latin
equivalent: “tuus”) and render “the light of the body is your eye”, which is
supported by papyrus 45, codices א, A, B and D. The omission is supported by codex Θ, the Byzantine
manuscripts and Theophylact. This inclusion may be the product of internal
harmonization within the verse by mimicking the pronoun in the second
occurrence of “οφθαλμος σου”.
[15] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “ουν” (therefore), which is supported by papyrus 45, codices א and B. The inclusion is supported by codices A, C, Θ, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The conjunction may have been missed by visual homoeoarcton (οταν ουν, thus missing “therefore”).
