Chapter 14
12. ελεγεν
δε και τω κεκληκοτι αυτον οταν ποιης αριστον η δειπνον μη φωνει τους φιλους
σου μηδε τους αδελφους σου μηδε τους συγγενεις σου μηδε γειτονας πλουσιους
μηποτε και αυτοι σε αντικαλεσωσιν και γενηται σοι ανταποδομα And he also said to him who had invited him, “When you make a dinner or
a supper, do not call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives,
nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back and you be repaid. |
13. αλλ
οταν ποιης δοχην καλει πτωχους αναπειρους[1] χωλους τυφλους But
when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, |
14. και
μακαριος εση οτι ουκ εχουσιν ανταποδουναι σοι ανταποδοθησεται γαρ σοι εν τη
αναστασει των δικαιων and
you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid in
the resurrection of the righteous.” |
15. ακουσας
δε τις των συνανακειμενων ταυτα ειπεν αυτω μακαριος ος[2] φαγεται αρτον[3] εν τη βασιλεια του θεου And when one of those who sat at the table with him heard these
things, he said to him, “Blessed is he who will eat bread in the kingdom of
God!” |
16. ο
δε ειπεν αυτω ανθρωπος τις εποιησεν[4] δειπνον μεγα και
εκαλεσεν πολλους But he said to him, “A certain man made a great supper, and he invited
many. |
17. και
απεστειλεν τον δουλον αυτου τη ωρα του δειπνου ειπειν τοις κεκλημενοις
ερχεσθε οτι ηδη ετοιμα εστιν παντα[5] And
he sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come,
for everything is now ready.’ |
18. και
ηρξαντο απο μιας παραιτεισθαι παντες ο πρωτος ειπεν αυτω αγρον ηγορασα και
εχω αναγκην εξελθειν και[6] ιδειν αυτον ερωτω σε εχε
με παρητημενον But
they all alike began to make excuses. “The first said to him, ‘I
have bought a field, and I must go and see it. I ask you, have me excused.’ |
19. και
ετερος ειπεν ζευγη βοων ηγορασα πεντε και πορευομαι δοκιμασαι αυτα ερωτω σε
εχε με παρητημενον “And
another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them
out. I ask you, have me excused.’ |
20. και
ετερος ειπεν γυναικα εγημα και δια τουτο ου δυναμαι ελθειν “And
another said, ‘I have married a wife, and for that reason I cannot come.’ |
21. και
παραγενομενος ο δουλος [7] απηγγειλεν τω κυριω
αυτου ταυτα τοτε οργισθεις ο οικοδεσποτης ειπεν τω δουλω αυτου εξελθε ταχεως
εις τας πλατειας και ρυμας της πολεως και τους πτωχους και αναπειρους[8] και τυφλους και χωλους εισαγαγε
ωδε “And
coming up, the servant reported these things to his lord. Then the master of
the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets
and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.’ |
22. και
ειπεν ο δουλος κυριε γεγονεν ως[9] επεταξας και ετι τοπος
εστιν “And
the servant said, ‘Lord, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.’ |
23. και
ειπεν ο κυριος προς τον δουλον εξελθε εις τας οδους και φραγμους και
αναγκασον εισελθειν ινα γεμισθη ο οικος μου “And
the lord said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and
compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. |
24. λεγω
γαρ υμιν οτι ουδεις των ανδρων εκεινων των κεκλημενων γευσεται μου του
δειπνου For
I say to you that none of those men who were invited shall taste of my
supper.’” |
[1] NA-Text reads “αναπειρους”.
Same verbal tense spelled differently. This spelling is supported by papyrus
75, codices A, B, D and Θ. The TR is supported by the Byzantine
manuscripts and Theophylact. The Greek text has been adjusted following the
NA-Text.
[2] NA-Text reads “οστις”. This
is not a translatable difference.
[3] M-Text, P-text and WPF35
read “αριστον” (dinner), which is supported by codices A*, W, family
of manuscripts ƒ13, the Byzantine manuscripts, the Curetonian Syriac,
Cyril of Jerusalem and Theophylact. The TR is supported by papyrus 75, codices א1, Ac, B, D, K*, L,
N, P, Δ, Θ, Ψ, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 579, 892, 1241, 2542, the Peshitta, the
Harklean Syriac, Clement of Alexandrian, Eusebius and Epiphanius. The support
for the TR is superior. The text remains unchanged.
[4] NA-text reads “εποιει”
(imperfect instead of aorist).
[5] NA-text omits “παντα” and renders “for it is now
ready”.
[6] NA-text reads “εξελθων”
(participle instead of infinitive).
[7] NA-text and Vg-St omit “εκεινος” and render “the servant”
instead of “that servant”. This omission is supported by papyrus 45, codices א, A, B, D, Θ and Theophylact. The inclusion is supported
by the Byzantine manuscripts. The word “that” is most certainly a later addition
to the original text inserted to clarify that the servant in view is the same
one that was sent in verse 17. This word has then been removed from the Greek
text and the translation, following the NA-Text.
