The gospel according to Luke
Chapter 12
εαυτοις απο της ζυμης των φαρισαιων ητις εστιν υποκρισις Meanwhile, when a multitude of many thousands had gathered
together, so that they trampled one another, he began to say to his disciples
first, “Beware
of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. |
κρυπτον ο ου γνωσθησεται But
there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will
not be known. |
whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light and what
you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the
housetops. |
I say you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that
have no more that they can do. |
φοβηθητε But
I will show you whom you should fear. Fear him who after he has killed, has
power to cast into hell[2]. Yes, I say to you, fear
him! |
not five sparrows sold for two assaria[4]? And not one of them is
forgotten by God. |
the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore[5] do not fear; you are of
more value than many sparrows. |
θεου “And
I say to you, everyone who confesses me before men, the Son of Man will also
confess before the angels of God, |
he who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. |
everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but he
who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. |
τι απολογησησθε η τι ειπητε And
when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities,
do not worry about how or what you should answer or what you should say, |
ειπειν for
the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you should say.” |
[1] M-Text and WPF35
read “αποκτενοντων”, which is supported by codex Θ and the Byzantine manuscripts. P-Text reads “αποκτεννοντων”, which is supported by
codices א and A.
The TR is supported by papyri 45 and 75, codex B and Theophylact. Codex D reads
The TR is well supported. No need of adjustment.
[2] Greek: Gehenna.
[3] NA-Text reads “πωλουνται”.
Same verbal tense, different spelling.
[4] Assarium or assarius: a
Roman coin worth the tenth of a drachma, perhaps equivalent to
a penny.
[5] NA-Text omits “Therefore”.
[6] NA-Text reads “εισφερωσιν”.
Those verbs are interchangeable.
[7] NA-Text reads “μεριμνησητε” (aorist subjunctive instead of present imperative).
