Chapter 5
1. εγενετο δε εν τω τον
οχλον επικεισθαι αυτω του[1]
ακουειν τον λογον του θεου και αυτος ην εστως παρα την λιμνην γεννησαρετ And it happened that while the
multitude pressed on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake
of Gennesaret. |
2. και ειδεν δυο πλοια
εστωτα παρα την λιμνην οι δε αλιεις αποβαντες απ αυτων επλυνον[2] τα
δικτυα And he saw two boats standing by the
lake, but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing the nets. |
3. εμβας δε εις εν των
πλοιων ο ην του[3]
σιμωνος ηρωτησεν αυτον απο της γης επαναγαγειν ολιγον και[4]
καθισας εδιδασκεν εκ του πλοιου τους οχλους And getting into one of the boats,
which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat
down and taught the multitudes from the boat. |
4. ως δε επαυσατο λαλων
ειπεν προς τον σιμωνα επαναγαγε εις το βαθος και χαλασατε τα δικτυα υμων εις
αγραν And when he had finished speaking, he
said to Simon, “Put
out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” |
5. και αποκριθεις ο[5] σιμων
ειπεν αυτω[6]
επιστατα δι ολης της[7]
νυκτος κοπιασαντες ουδεν ελαβομεν επι δε τω ρηματι σου χαλασω το δικτυον[8] And answering, Simon said to him,
“Master, we worked all night and caught nothing; but at your word I will let
down the net.” |
6. και τουτο ποιησαντες
συνεκλεισαν πληθος ιχθυων πολυ διερρηγνυτο[9] δε το
δικτυον αυτων And when they had done this, they
caught a great multitude of fish, and their net was breaking. |
7. και κατενευσαν τοις
μετοχοις τοις[10] εν τω
ετερω πλοιω του ελθοντας συλλαβεσθαι αυτοις και ηλθον και επλησαν αμφοτερα τα
πλοια ωστε βυθιζεσθαι αυτα So they signaled to their partners in
the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so
that they began to sink. |
8. ιδων δε σιμων πετρος
προσεπεσεν τοις γονασιν του[11] ιησου
λεγων εξελθε απ εμου οτι ανηρ αμαρτωλος ειμι κυριε But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell
down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord.” |
9. θαμβος γαρ περιεσχεν
αυτον και παντας τους συν αυτω επι τη αγρα των ιχθυων η[12]
συνελαβον For he and all who were with him were astonished
at the catch of fish which they had taken; |
10. ομοιως δε και ιακωβον
και ιωαννην υιους ζεβεδαιου οι ησαν κοινωνοι τω σιμωνι και ειπεν προς τον
σιμωνα ο ιησους μη φοβου απο του νυν ανθρωπους εση ζωγρων and so also were James and John, sons
of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now
on you will be catching men.” |
11. και καταγαγοντες τα
πλοια επι την γην αφεντες απαντα[13]
ηκολουθησαν αυτω And when they had brought their boats
to land, they left everything and followed him. |
[1] NA-Text reads “και” (and).
[2] NA-Text and Vg-St read “επλυνον” (imperfect instead of aorist, Latin equivalent: “lavabant”).
The imperfect is supported by papyrus 75, codices א, B, C*,
D, L, Q, W, (579), 892, 1241 and the Diatessaron. The aorist is supported by
codices A, C, Θ, Ψ, both families of
manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscule 33, the Byzantine
manuscripts and Theophylact. The support for the imperfect tense is slightly
better and has been preferred in the Greek text.
[3] NA-Text omits “του”.
[4] NA-Text replaces “και” by “δε” placing it after the verb.
Same meaning.
[5] NA-Text omits “ο”.
[6] NA-Text omits “αυτω” (to him).
[7] NA-Text omits “της”. This omission was possibly caused by visual homoeuteleuton (ολης της, thus missing “της”).
[8] NA-Text reads “τα δικτυα” (plural instead of singular) and renders “the
nets” (also in verse 6).
[9] NA-Text reads “διερρησσετο”. Same verbal tense spelled differently.
[10] NA-Text omits “τοις”.
[11] NA-Text, PT, WPF35
and M-Text omit “του”. This omission is
supported by codices א, B and
the Byzantine
manuscripts. The inclusion of the definite article is supported
by codices A, C, L, Θ, Ψ, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and
ƒ13,
minuscules 33, 579, 1241, 1424 and Theophylact. The TR is very well supported
and stands in no need of correction.
[12] NA-Text reads “ων” (genitive plural masculine instead of dative singular feminine).
[13] NA-Text reads “παντα”, which can mean the same thing, but the support
for the Byzantine reading is more widespread and therefore has been maintained
in the text without any change.
