Luke 1:5-25 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Luke

Chapter 1


 

5. εγενετο εν ταις ημεραις ηρωδου του[1] βασιλεως της ιουδαιας ιερευς τις ονοματι ζαχαριας εξ εφημεριας αβια και η γυνη αυτου[2] εκ των θυγατερων ααρων και το ονομα αυτης ελισαβετ

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. And his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

6. ησαν δε δικαιοι αμφοτεροι ενωπιον[3] του θεου πορευομενοι εν πασαις ταις εντολαις και δικαιωμασιν του κυριου αμεμπτοι

And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.

7. και ουκ ην αυτοις τεκνον καθοτι η ελισαβετ ην στειρα και αμφοτεροι προβεβηκοτες εν ταις ημεραις αυτων ησαν

But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were advanced in their days.

8. εγενετο δε εν τω ιερατευειν αυτον εν τη ταξει της εφημεριας αυτου εναντι του θεου

And it happened that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his division

9. κατα το εθος της ιερατειας ελαχε[4] του θυμιασαι εισελθων εις τον ναον του κυριου

according to the custom of the priest’s office that his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

10. και παν το πληθος ην του λαου προσευχομενον εξω τη ωρα του θυμιαματος

And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense.

11. ωφθη δε αυτω αγγελος κυριου εστως εκ δεξιων του θυσιαστηριου του θυμιαματος

Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12. και εταραχθη ζαχαριας ιδων και φοβος επεπεσεν επ αυτον

And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.

13. ειπεν δε προς αυτον ο αγγελος μη φοβου ζαχαρια διοτι εισηκουσθη η δεησις σου και η γυνη σου ελισαβετ γεννησει υιον σοι και καλεσεις το ονομα αυτου ιωαννην

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

14. και εσται χαρα σοι και αγαλλιασις και πολλοι επι τη γενεσει[5] αυτου χαρησονται

And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.

15. εσται γαρ μεγας ενωπιον του[6] κυριου και οινον και σικερα ου μη πιη και πνευματος αγιου πλησθησεται ετι εκ κοιλιας μητρος αυτου

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. And he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

16. και πολλους των υιων ισραηλ επιστρεψει επι κυριον τον θεον αυτων

And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.

17. και αυτος προελευσεται ενωπιον αυτου εν πνευματι και δυναμει ηλιου επιστρεψαι καρδιας πατερων επι τεκνα και απειθεις εν φρονησει δικαιων ετοιμασαι κυριω λαον κατεσκευασμενον

And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

18. και ειπεν ζαχαριας προς τον αγγελον κατα τι γνωσομαι τουτο εγω γαρ ειμι πρεσβυτης και η γυνη μου προβεβηκυια εν ταις ημεραις αυτης

And Zacharias said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in her days.”

19. και αποκριθεις ο αγγελος ειπεν αυτω εγω ειμι γαβριηλ ο παρεστηκως ενωπιον του θεου και απεσταλην λαλησαι προς σε και ευαγγελισασθαι σοι ταυτα

And answering, the angel said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.

20. και ιδου εση σιωπων και μη δυναμενος λαλησαι αχρι ης ημερας γενηται ταυτα ανθ ων ουκ επιστευσας τοις λογοις μου οιτινες πληρωθησονται εις τον καιρον αυτων

And behold, you will be silent and not able to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”

21. και ην ο λαος προσδοκων τον ζαχαριαν και εθαυμαζον εν τω χρονιζειν αυτον εν τω ναω

And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple.

22. εξελθων δε ουκ ηδυνατο[7] λαλησαι αυτοις και επεγνωσαν οτι οπτασιαν εωρακεν εν τω ναω και αυτος ην διανευων αυτοις και διεμενεν κωφος

And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he was making signs to them and remained mute.

23. και εγενετο ως επλησθησαν αι ημεραι της λειτουργιας αυτου απηλθεν εις τον οικον αυτου

And it happened that when the days of his ministration[8] were fulfilled, he departed to his house.

24. μετα δε ταυτας τας ημερας συνελαβεν ελισαβετ η γυνη αυτου και περιεκρυβεν εαυτην μηνας πεντε λεγουσα

Now after those days Elizabeth his wife conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying,

25. οτι ουτως μοι πεποιηκεν ο[9] κυριος εν ημεραις αις επειδεν αφελειν το[10] ονειδος μου εν ανθρωποις

“Thus the Lord has done for me in the days in which he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.”



[1] NA-Text omits “του”.

[2] NA-Text reads “γυνη αυτω” instead of “η γυνη αυτου”, which renders “and he had a wife”.

[3] NA-Text reads “εναντιον”. Those words are interchangeable. The support for the Byzantine word is widespread, while the support for the Alexandrian text is local, suggesting scribal adjustment at a local level. 

[4] NA-Text and P-Text read “ελαχε”, which is supported by codices א, B, D and Theophylact. The uncontracted form is supported by codex Θ and the Byzantine manuscripts. The contracted form has been adopted in the Greek text, following the NA-Text.

[5] NA-Text reads “γενεσει” which is supported by codices א, A, B, D, W and Θ. The TR is supported by codices Γ, Ψ, 053, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 28, 33, 700, 1241, 1424 and the Byzantine manuscripts. Those words are interchangeable, but the Byzantine “γεννησει” seems to be an adjustment based on the same word used as a verb in the previous verse. The Greek text has then been adjusted following the NA-Text.

[6] NA-Text brackets “του”.

[7] NA-Text reads “εδυνατο”, same verbal tense spelled differently.

[8] Greek: liturgy [ministered by priests].

[9] NA-Text omits the definite article “ο”.

[10] NA-Text omits the definite article “το”.
