Luke 1:57-66 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Luke

Chapter 1



57. τη δε ελισαβετ επλησθη ο χρονος του τεκειν αυτην και εγεννησεν υιον

Now the time that Elizabeth should give birth was fulfilled, and she bore a son.

58. και ηκουσαν οι περιοικοι και οι συγγενεις αυτης οτι εμεγαλυνεν κυριος το ελεος αυτου μετ αυτης και συνεχαιρον αυτη

And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her, and they rejoiced with her.

59. και εγενετο εν τη ογδοη ημερα[1] ηλθον περιτεμειν το παιδιον και εκαλουν αυτο επι τω ονοματι του πατρος αυτου ζαχαριαν

And it happened that on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias.

60. και αποκριθεισα η μητηρ αυτου ειπεν ουχι αλλα κληθησεται ιωαννης

And answering, his mother said, “No; but he shall be called John.”

61. και ειπον[2] προς αυτην οτι ουδεις εστιν εν τη συγγενεια[3] σου ος καλειται τω ονοματι τουτω

And they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”

62. ενενευον δε τω πατρι αυτου το τι αν θελοι καλεισθαι αυτον[4]

And they made signs to his father, what he would have him called.

63. και αιτησας πινακιδιον εγραψεν λεγων ιωαννης εστιν το[5] ονομα αυτου και εθαυμασαν παντες

And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying “His name is John.” And they all marveled.

64. ανεωχθη δε το στομα αυτου παραχρημα και η γλωσσα αυτου και ελαλει ευλογων τον θεον

And his mouth was opened immediately and his tongue was loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.

65. και εγενετο επι παντας φοβος τους περιοικουντας αυτους και εν ολη τη ορεινη της ιουδαιας διελαλειτο παντα τα ρηματα ταυτα

And fear came upon all their neighbors. And all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea.

66. και εθεντο παντες οι ακουσαντες εν τη καρδια αυτων λεγοντες τι αρα το παιδιον τουτο εσται και γαρ[6] χειρ κυριου ην μετ αυτου

And all who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, “What then will this child be?” For the hand of the Lord was with him.



[1] NA-Text reads “εν τη ημερα τη ογδοη”. Same meaning.

[2] NA-Text reads “ειπαν”. Same verbal tense spelled differently.

[3] NA-Text reads “εκ της συγγενειας” and renders “of your relatives”.

[4] NA-Text reads “αυτο” (neuter instead of masculine).

[5] NA-Text omits the definite article “το” before “name”. The inclusion of the article is supported by all text-types, including codex Sinaiticus. Codex Vaticanus was corrected in the 500’s or 600’s when scribes noticed that the article was missing in the text.

[6] NA-Text and Vg-St add “γαρ” (Latin equivalent: “etenim”). This addition is supported papyrus 4, codices א, B, C*, D, L, W, Ψ, minuscule 565, the old Latin codices, the Coptic versions and a marginal note in the Harklean Syriac version. The omission is supported by codices A, C2, Θ, 053, 0130, both family of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 28 and 33, the Byzantine manuscripts, the Diatessaron, the Peshitta, the Harklean Syriac version and Theophylact. Luke uses those two conjunctions together several times in verses 6:32, 6:33, 6:34, 7:8, 11:4, 22:37, 22:59 and acts 19:40, but only in verse 22:37 it is used for the sake of emphasis, which could be translated as “for indeed” or simply “for” in this context. The evidence suggests that the clause in this verse was meant to be emphatic with the omission of “γαρ” possibly caused by a parableptic error (γαρ χειρ, thus missing “γαρ”). Therefore, the Greek text and the translation have been adjusted following the NA-Text.
