The gospel according to Matthew
Chapter 24
1. και εξελθων ο ιησους
επορευετο απο του ιερου και προσηλθον οι μαθηται αυτου επιδειξαι αυτω τας
οικοδομας του ιερου Now Jesus went out from the temple and
as he was going on his way, his disciples came to him to show him the
buildings of the temple. |
2. ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν
αυτοις ου βλεπετε παντα ταυτα αμην λεγω υμιν ου μη αφεθη ωδε λιθος επι λιθον
ος ου [1]
καταλυθησεται And answering,[2]
he said to them, “Do
you see all these things? Truly I say to you, there will not be left here one
stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” |
3. καθημενου δε αυτου επι
του ορους των ελαιων προσηλθον αυτω οι μαθηται κατ ιδιαν λεγοντες ειπε ημιν
ποτε ταυτα εσται και τι το σημειον της σης παρουσιας και της[3]
συντελειας του αιωνος And as he sat on the Mount of Olives,
the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things
be? And what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age? |
4. και αποκριθεις ο ιησους
ειπεν αυτοις βλεπετε μη τις υμας πλανηση And answering, Jesus said to them, “See that no one leads you
astray. |
5. πολλοι γαρ ελευσονται
επι τω ονοματι μου λεγοντες εγω ειμι ο χριστος και πολλους πλανησουσιν For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the
Christ,’ and will lead many astray. |
6. μελλησετε δε ακουειν
πολεμους και ακοας πολεμων ορατε μη θροεισθε δει γαρ παντα γενεσθαι αλλ ουπω
εστιν το τελος And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See
that you are not troubled, for all[4] this must happen, but the
end is not yet. |
7. εγερθησεται γαρ εθνος
επι εθνος και βασιλεια επι βασιλειαν και εσονται λιμοι και λοιμοι και σεισμοι
κατα τοπους For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and pestilences[5] and earthquakes in various places. |
8. παντα δε ταυτα αρχη
ωδινων But all these things are the beginning of sorrows. |
9. τοτε παραδωσουσιν υμας
εις θλιψιν και αποκτενουσιν υμας και εσεσθε μισουμενοι υπο παντων των εθνων
δια το ονομα μου “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and
will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. |
10. και τοτε
σκανδαλισθησονται πολλοι και αλληλους παραδωσουσιν και μισησουσιν αλληλους Then many will fall away and will betray one another
and will hate one another. |
11. και πολλοι ψευδοπροφηται
εγερθησονται και πλανησουσιν πολλους And many false prophets will arise and will lead
many astray. |
12. και δια το πληθυνθηναι
την ανομιαν ψυγησεται η αγαπη των πολλων And because iniquity will abound, the love of many
will grow cold. |
13. ο δε υπομεινας εις τελος
ουτος σωθησεται But he who endures to the end will be saved. |
14. και κηρυχθησεται τουτο
το ευαγγελιον της βασιλειας εν ολη τη οικουμενη εις μαρτυριον πασιν τοις
εθνεσιν και τοτε ηξει το τελος And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the
whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. |

and the PT omit “μη”, which is confirmed by the collective witness of codices א, B, D,
Chrysostom and Theophylact. “μη” has then been removed from the Greek text.
[2] NA-Text and VgSt omit “Jesus” and add
at the beginning of the verse “And answering”, thus rendering “And answering,
he said to them”. The omission is supported by codices א, B, D,
Θ, Jerome and Chrysostom. Codex Θ adds
“Jesus”. The Byzantine reading is supported by Theophylact and the Byzantine
minuscules. The Diatessaron includes the proper name but adds “and answering”
like codex Θ. The collective witness of
the Alexandrian, Byzantine and Western types from the 4th century is
unanimously confirming the addition of “and answering”. And the proper name “Jesus”
was probably added to clarify who the person is who is going to respond in
context, especially because those seem to be the opening verses from a lesson
in an old lectionary as it is suggested by Chrysostom’s homily 75. The Nestle-Aland
reading has then been adopted into the main text.

article “της”.
[4] NA-Text and VgSt omit “all”.
The omission is supported by codices א, B, D, L, Θ, family
of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 33, 205, 557,
892 ,1113*, 1604, 2217, 2524, one old Latin codex, the Coptic and the Ethiopic
versions, Cyprian, Jerome and Eusebius. The inclusion of “all” is supported by
codices C, E, F, G, H, K, O, W, Δ, Π, Σ, Φ, 0102, family
of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscules 28, 157, 180, 544,
579, 597, 700, 828, 1006, 1009, 1010, 1071, 1079, 1170, 1195, 1216, 1230, 1241,
1242, 1243, 1253, 1292, 1342, 1344, 1365, 1424, 1505, 1546, 1646, 2148, 2174, 2786,
the Byzantine minuscules, one old Latin codex, the Peshitta, the Armenian, the
Georgian, the Slavic and the Harklean Syriac version, Chrysostom and
Theophylact. This omission is suspicious because the parallel passages in Mark
13:7 and Luke 21:9 both omit “all”. The wording in Mark is very close to Matthew,
which highly suggests that harmonization may be the cause of the omission of “all”
in the Egyptian manuscripts. It’s noteworthy that the Diatessaron added material from Lk. 21:8-9 and Mk 13:7 omitting “all” between Matt. 24:5 and 24:7, which may have contributed to the confusion.
[5] NA-Text omits “and pestilences”,
which was probably caused by a parabletic error (λιμοι και λοιμοι και, thus missing “and pestilences”).
