Matthew 21:18-27 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Matthew

Chapter 21



18. Πρωῒας[1] δὲ ἐπανάγων εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἐπείνασεν.

Now in the morning, as he returned to the city, he was hungry.

19. Καὶ ἰδὼν συκῆν μίαν ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ ἦλθεν ἐπʼ αὐτήν, καὶ οὐδὲν εὗρεν ἐν αὐτῇ εἰ μὴ φύλλα μόνον. Καὶ λέγει αὐτῇ, Μηκέτι ἐκ σοῦ καρπὸς γένηται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. Καὶ ἐξηράνθη παραχρῆμα ἡ συκῆ.

And seeing a fig tree by the road, he came to it and found nothing on it but leaves only. And he said to it, “Let there be no fruit from you forever!” And immediately the fig tree withered away.

20. Καὶ ἰδόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐθαύμασαν, λέγοντες, Πῶς παραχρῆμα ἐξηράνθη ἡ συκῆ;

And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?”

21. Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐὰν ἔχητε πίστιν καὶ μὴ διακριθῆτε, οὐ μόνον τὸ τῆς συκῆς ποιήσετε, ἀλλὰ κἂν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ εἴπητε, Ἄρθητι καὶ βλήθητι εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, γενήσεται.

And answering, Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it will happen.

22. Καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἂν[2] αἰτήσητε ἐν τῇ προσευχῇ πιστεύοντες λήψεσθε[3].

And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

23. Καὶ ἐλθόντι αὐτῷ[4] εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν προσῆλθον αὐτῷ διδάσκοντι οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τοῦ λαοῦ, λέγοντες, Ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς; Καὶ τίς σοι ἔδωκεν τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην;

And when he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority do you do these things? And who gave you this authority?”

24. Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ἐρωτήσω ὑμᾶς κἀγὼ λόγον ἕνα, ὃν ἐὰν εἴπητέ μοι κἀγὼ ὑμῖν ἐρῶ ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ·

And answering, Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one question, which if you tell me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.

25. Τὸ βάπτισμα [5] Ἰωάννου πόθεν ἦν; ξ οὐρανοῦ ἢ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων; οἱ δὲ διελογίζοντο παρ᾽[6] ἑαυτοῖς, λέγοντες, Ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, Ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ ἡμῖν, Διὰ τί οὖν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ;

The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from men?” And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’

26. Ἐὰν δὲ εἴπωμεν, Ἐξ ἀνθρώπων, φοβούμεθα τὸν ὄχλον, πάντες γὰρ ἔχουσιν τὸν Ἰωάννην ὡς προφήτην.

But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the multitude, for all hold John as a prophet.”

27. Καὶ ἀποκριθέντες τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἶπον,[7] Οὐκ οἴδαμεν. φη αὐτοῖς καὶ αὐτός, Οὐδὲ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ.

And answering Jesus, they said, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.



[1] NA-Text reads “πρωι” (adverb instead of a noun)

[2] M-Text, P-Text and WPF35 read “εαν” (which can mean “whatever”, but more specifically “if”): C K L W Δ 700 Byzpt | TR: א B Θ Byzpt Jerome (Latin: et omnia quaecumque pitieritis) Theophylact. Codex D omits this word, but the Latin part of the codex reads “quaecumque”. Both readings are well supported.

[3] NA-Text reads “λημψεσθε”, same word spelled differently. See footnote in Matthew 10:41.  

[4] NA-Text reads “ελθοντος αυτου” (genitive instead of dative).  

[5] NA-Text adds the definite article “το” before John.  

[6] NA-Text reads “εν”. Both can mean “among” in this context. Codices Sinaiticus and Ephraemi agree with the Byzantine text.

[7] NA-Text reads “ειπαν”, same word spelled differently.
