Matthew 21:12-17 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Matthew

Chapter 21

And Jesus entered the temple of God[2] and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold the doves.

And he said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made[3] it a den of robbers!”

And the lame and the blind came to him in the temple, and he healed them.

But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children who were crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the son of David!” they were indignant,

16. καὶ εἶπον[5] αὐτῷ, Ἀκούεις τί οὗτοι λέγουσιν; δὲ Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτοῖς, Ναί. Οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε ὅτι Ἐκ στόματος νηπίων καὶ θηλαζόντων κατηρτίσω αἶνον;

and said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of children and nursing babies you have perfected praise’?”

And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.

[1] NA-Text omits the definite article before “Jesus”: א B C W Δ 28 700 1241 Byzmss | TR: D K L N Γ Θ ƒ1 ƒ13 33 565 892 1010 1424 Byz Chrysostom Theophylact. The TR is well supported and stands in no need of correction.

[2] NA-Text omits “of God”, which is possibly the result of contextual harmonization to verse 12 itself that mentions the temple a second time without the qualifier “of God” and/or with verses 14, 15 and 23 that omit “of God” after the word “temple”. The parallel passages in Mk 11:15 or Luke 19:45 without “of God” and the frequency with which “temple” appears in the New Testament without “of God” intensify the potential for reducing accidently “temple of God” to simply “temple”.

[3] NA-Text reads “make” (Gr.: ποιειτε) instead of “made” (Gr.: εποιησατε)

[4] NA-Text adds “τους” (“that” in this context).

[5] NA-Text reads “ειπαν”, same word spelled differently.
