Matthew 27:57-66 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Matthew

Chapter 27


 

57. οψιας δε γενομενης ηλθεν ανθρωπος πλουσιος απο αριμαθαιας τουνομα ιωσηφ ος και αυτος εμαθητευσεν[1] τω ιησου

Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathaea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.

58. ουτος προσελθων τω πιλατω ητησατο το σωμα του ιησου τοτε ο πιλατος εκελευσεν αποδοθηναι το σωμα

He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body[2] to be delivered.

59. και λαβων το σωμα ο ιωσηφ ενετυλιξεν αυτο [3] σινδονι καθαρα

When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth

60. και εθηκεν αυτο εν τω καινω αυτου μνημειω ο ελατομησεν εν τη πετρα και προσκυλισας λιθον μεγαν τη θυρα του μνημειου απηλθεν

and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. Then he rolled a great stone against the door of the tomb and departed.

61. ην δε εκει μαρια η μαγδαληνη και η αλλη μαρια[4] καθημεναι απεναντι του ταφου

And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting across from the tomb.

62. τη δε επαυριον ητις εστιν μετα την παρασκευην συνηχθησαν οι αρχιερεις και οι φαρισαιοι προς πιλατον

Now on the next day, which followed the Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered before Pilate,

63. λεγοντες κυριε εμνησθημεν οτι εκεινος ο πλανος ειπεν ετι ζων μετα τρεις ημερας εγειρομαι

saying, “Sir, we remember what that deceiver said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will rise again.’

64. κελευσον ουν ασφαλισθηναι τον ταφον εως της τριτης ημερας μηποτε ελθοντες οι μαθηται αυτου κλεψωσιν αυτον και ειπωσιν τω λαω ηγερθη απο των νεκρων και εσται η εσχατη πλανη χειρων της πρωτης

Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples come [5] and steal him away, and say to the people, ‘He is risen from the dead;’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”

65. εφη αυτοις ο πιλατος εχετε κουστωδιαν υπαγετε ασφαλισασθε ως οιδατε

[6] Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you know how.”

66. οι δε πορευθεντες ησφαλισαντο τον ταφον σφραγισαντες τον λιθον μετα της κουστωδιας

And going, they made the tomb secure, sealing the stone with the guard.

[4] NA-Text reads “μαριαμ” (indeclinable proper name instead of nominative singular feminine)

[5] NA-Text and VgSt omit “by night”. The omission is supported by codices A, B, C*, D, K, W, Y, Δ, Θ, Π, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 22, 33, 579, 1010, 1071, 1079, 1195, 1216, 1230, 1253, 1424, 1546, 1646, Old Latin, the Harklean Syriac, the Palestinian Syriac, the Gothic, the Coptic versions, Origenlat, Jerome, Chrysostom and John of Damascus. The Georgian versions and the Byzantine minuscules are divided. The inclusion is supported by codices C, L, S, Γ, minuscules 28, 69, 565, 700, 892, 1009, 1241, 1242, 1344, 1365, 2148 and 2174, the Syriac Sinaiticus, the Peshitta, the Ethiopic and the Armenian version, the diatessaron and Theophylact. The non-inclusion is supported by all text-types and important patristic witnesses from multiple locations. The addition of “by night” in the text is likely a harmonization to Matthew 28:13 where this dialogue is recounted with the inclusion of “by night”. Therefore, this accretion has been dropped from the Greek text and the translation following the NA-Text.

[6] NA-Text, P-Text and Vg-St omit “And”, which is supported by codices B, E, F, G, H, K, L, Mc, Γ, Θ, family of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscules 33, 157, 700, 1241, the Syriac Sinaiticus, the Peshitta, the Sahidic Coptic, the middle Ӕgyptian Coptic and Theophylact. The Bohairic Coptic version is divided. The inclusion of the conjunction is supported by codices א, A, C, D, W, Y, Δ, Π, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 28, 565, 579, 892, 1010, 1424, the Byzantine manuscripts and the Harklean Syriac version. The support for the inclusion is excellent. Scholz, Griesbach, Wordsworth, Lachmann, Alford, Tishendorf, Tregelles, Hort, Baljon and Antoniades have all sided with the Alexandrian text here. It is more prudent then to remove the conjunction from the Greek text here.
