Mark 2:23-28 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 2


 

23. και εγενετο παραπορευεσθαι αυτον εν τοις σαββασιν δια των σποριμων και ηρξαντο οι μαθηται αυτου οδον ποιειν τιλλοντες τους σταχυας

Now it happened that on the Sabbath day he was going through the grain fields. And as they went, his disciples began to pluck the ears of grain.

24. και οι φαρισαιοι ελεγον αυτω ιδε τι ποιουσιν [1] τοις σαββασιν ο ουκ εξεστιν

And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Behold, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath day?”

25. και αυτος ελεγεν αυτοις[2] ουδεποτε ανεγνωτε τι εποιησεν δαυιδ οτε χρειαν εσχεν και επεινασεν αυτος και οι μετ αυτου

And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry—he, and those who were with him?

26. πως εισηλθεν εις τον οικον του θεου επι αβιαθαρ [3] αρχιερεως και τους αρτους της προθεσεως εφαγεν ους ουκ εξεστιν φαγειν ει μη τοις ιερευσιν[4] και εδωκεν και τοις συν αυτω ουσιν

How he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the show bread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests and also gave it to those who were with him?”

27. και ελεγεν αυτοις το σαββατον δια τον ανθρωπον εγενετο ουχ ο ανθρωπος δια το σαββατον

And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, [5] not man for the Sabbath.

28. ωστε κυριος εστιν ο υιος του ανθρωπου και του σαββατου

Therefore the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”



[1] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “εν”, which is supported by codices א, A, B, W and Θ. The inclusion is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The addition of this preposition is probably due to harmonization to the same “εν τοις σαββασιν” in verse 23. Therefore, the preposition has been removed from the text.

[2] NA-Text reads “ λεγει αυτοις” (he says to them) instead of “αυτος ελεγεν αυτοις” (he said to them).

[3] NA-Text, M-Text, P-Text and WPF35 omit “του”. The omission is supported by codices א, B, G, K, L, Y, minuscules 118, 157, 892, 1010, 1195, 1216, 1230, 1242, 1342, 1344, 1365, 1424, 1646, 2174 and 2427, the Byzantine manuscripts. The inclusion is supported by codices A, C, Δ, Θ, Π, Σ, Φ, 074, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 28, 33, 565, 579, 700, 1071, 1079, 1241, 1253 and 1546c and Theophylact. The article here is possibly a natural addition to the text. It has been dropped following the NA-Text and the M-Text.

[4] NA-Text reads “ τους ιερεις” (accusative instead of dative).

[5] NA-Text and Vg-St add “and”. The inclusion is supported by codices א, B, Θ, the Diatessaron and Bede. The omission is supported by codex A, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The New Testament authors utilize a negation with “και ουχ” after a first statement that is related to the following negation. Mark used this resource in Mark 1:22 and looking at the external evidence, it is possible that he wrote “και ουχ” here, following the statement and the negation slightly modifying the main clause. Therefore, the Alexandrian conjunction is a strong variant.
