Chapter 1
29. και ευθεως[1] εκ
της συναγωγης εξελθοντες ηλθον εις την οικιαν σιμωνος και ανδρεου μετα
ιακωβου και ιωαννου And immediately, when they had come out
of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and
John. |
30. η δε πενθερα σιμωνος
κατεκειτο πυρεσσουσα και ευθεως λεγουσιν αυτω περι αυτης Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. |
31. και προσελθων ηγειρεν
αυτην κρατησας της χειρος αυτης και αφηκεν αυτην ο πυρετος ευθεως και
διηκονει αυτοις And coming near, he took her[2]
by the hand and lifted her up. And immediately[3]
the fever left her, and she served them. |
32. οψιας δε γενομενης οτε
εδυ ο ηλιος εφερον προς αυτον παντας τους κακως εχοντας και τους
δαιμονιζομενους And at evening, when the sun had set,
they brought to him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. |
33. και η πολις ολη
επισυνηγμενη ην προς την θυραν And the whole city was gathered
together at the door. |
34. και εθεραπευσεν πολλους
κακως εχοντας ποικιλαις νοσοις και δαιμονια πολλα εξεβαλεν και ουκ ηφιεν
λαλειν τα δαιμονια οτι ηδεισαν αυτον And he healed many who were sick with
various diseases and cast out many demons. And he did not allow the demons to
speak, because they knew him. |
35. και πρωι εννυχα[4] λιαν
αναστας εξηλθεν και απηλθεν εις ερημον τοπον κακει προσηυχετο And rising up quite early in the
morning, he went out and departed into a deserted place, and he was praying
there. |
36. και κατεδιωξαν[5] αυτον
ο[6] σιμων
και οι μετ αυτου And Simon and those who were with him
searched for him. |
37. και ευροντες[7] αυτον
[8] λεγουσιν
αυτω οτι παντες ζητουσιν σε And finding him, they said to him,
“Everyone is looking for you.” |
38. και λεγει αυτοις αγωμεν
εις τας εχομενας κωμοπολεις ινα και εκει[9]
κηρυξω εις τουτο γαρ εξεληλυθα[10] And he said to them, “Let us go [11] into the next towns, that
I may preach there also, because for this reason I have come out.” |
39. και ην κηρυσσων εις τας συναγωγας[12] αυτων
εις ολην την γαλιλαιαν και τα δαιμονια εκβαλλων And he was[13]
preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and casting out demons. |
[1] NA-Text reads “ευθυς”. Same meaning.
[2] NA-Text omits “her” and renders
“took the hand”.
[3] NA-Text omits
“immediately”.
[4] NA-Text and P-Text read “εννυχα”. Same adverb, different spelling. This reading is supported by codices א, B, D and Θ. The TR is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The Alexandrian spelling has a better support and has been adopted in the Greek text.
[5] NA-Text reads “κατεδιωξεν” (singular instead of
plural).
[6] NA-Text omits the definite
article before the proper name “Simon”.
[7] NA-Text reads “ευρον” (indicative instead of
participle).
[8] NA-Text adds “and”, which
makes sense with a second aorist active indicative preceding it instead of a
participle.
[9] NA-Text and M-Text read “και εκει” instead of “κακει”. The non-contracted form
of “and there” is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ, the Byzantine minuscules and Theophylact. The Greek text has been
adjusted following the NA-Text and the M-Text.
[10] NA-Text reads “εξηλθον” (second aorist instead of perfect tense). The reduction
in the Alexandrian text is likely a scribal conformation to a more common
verbal tense.
[11] NA-Text adds “elsewhere”
(Gr.: “αλλαχου”).
[12] NA-Text reads “εις τας συναγωγας” (accusative following the preposition “εις” instead of dative following the preposition “εν”). The NA-Text is supported by codices א, A, B, C, D, K, L, W, Δ, Θ, Π, 090, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 28, 33, 157, 174, 565, 892, 1009, 1079, 1195, 1230, 1241, 1253, 1342, 1546, 2427 and 2786 and part of the Byzantine minuscules. The byzantine text is supported by codices M, U, Γ, minuscules 700, 1010, 1071, 1216, 1242, 1344, 1365, 1646, 2148 and 2174, part of the Byzantine minuscules and Theophylact. The support is obviously on the side of the NA-Text. The Byzantine reading in this verse appears to be the product of harmonization with the grammar found in the parallel passage in Luke 4:44 that reads “εν ταις συναγωγαις” in several witnesses. Therefore, the Greek text has been adjusted accordingly.
[13] NA-Text reads “went” instead of “was”
