The gospel according to Matthew
Chapter 26
47. και ετι αυτου λαλουντος
ιδου ιουδας εις των δωδεκα ηλθεν και μετ αυτου οχλος πολυς μετα μαχαιρων και
ξυλων απο των αρχιερεων και πρεσβυτερων του λαου While he was still speaking, behold,
Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords
and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people. |
48. ο δε παραδιδους αυτον
εδωκεν αυτοις σημειον λεγων ον αν φιλησω αυτος εστιν κρατησατε αυτον Now he who betrayed him had given them
a sign, saying, “Whoever I kiss, he is the one. Seize him.” |
49. και ευθεως προσελθων τω
ιησου ειπεν χαιρε ραββι και κατεφιλησεν αυτον And immediately he came to Jesus, and
said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. |
50. ο δε ιησους ειπεν αυτω
εταιρε εφ ο[1] παρει
τοτε προσελθοντες επεβαλον τας χειρας επι τον ιησουν και εκρατησαν αυτον And Jesus said to him, “Friend, why are you here?”
Then
they came and laid hands on Jesus and took him. |
51. και ιδου εις των μετα
ιησου εκτεινας την χειρα απεσπασεν την μαχαιραν αυτου και παταξας τον δουλον
του αρχιερεως αφειλεν αυτου το ωτιον And behold, one of those who were with
Jesus, stretching out the hand, drew his sword, and struck the servant of the
high priest, and cut off his ear. |
52. τοτε λεγει αυτω ο ιησους
αποστρεψον σου την μαχαιραν εις τον τοπον αυτης παντες γαρ οι λαβοντες
μαχαιραν εν μαχαιρη[2]
απολουνται[3] Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into
its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. |
53. η δοκεις οτι ου δυναμαι
αρτι παρακαλεσαι τον πατερα μου και παραστησει μοι πλειους[4] η[5]
δωδεκα λεγεωνας[6]
αγγελων Or do you think that I could not ask my Father, and
he would even now send me more than twelve legions of angels? |
54. πως ουν πληρωθωσιν αι
γραφαι οτι ουτως δει γενεσθαι How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that it
must be so?” |
55. εν εκεινη τη ωρα ειπεν ο
ιησους τοις οχλοις ως επι ληστην εξηλθετε[7] μετα
μαχαιρων και ξυλων συλλαβειν με καθ ημεραν προς υμας εκαθεζομην διδασκων εν
τω ιερω και ουκ εκρατησατε με In that hour Jesus said to the
multitudes, “Have
you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to seize me? I sat
daily with you[8], teaching in the temple,
and you did not arrest me. |
56. τουτο δε ολον γεγονεν
ινα πληρωθωσιν αι γραφαι των προφητων τοτε οι μαθηται παντες αφεντες αυτον
εφυγον But all this has happened that the Scriptures of the
prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and
fled. |
[1] NA-Text reads “ο” (accusative instead of dative), which is supported by papyrus 37, codices א, A, B, D, Θ and part of the Byzantine manuscripts. The dative is supported by part of the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The accusative has been adopted in the Greek text.
[2] NA-Text reads “μαχαιρη”, same word spelled differently. This spelling is supported by papyrus 37, codices א, A, B and Θ. The TR is supported by codex D, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The spelling in the Byzantine text was probably adjusted to read closer to the previous occurrences of the same word in the verse. The text has been adjusted to read like the NA-Text that has preserved the harder reading.
[3] M-Text reads “αποθανουνται” (middle deponent instead of middle voice), which
is supported by codices K, W, Γ, Δ, 0133, family of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscules 565, 1241, the
Byzantine minuscules, the Peshitta, the Harklean Syriac, possibly the middle Ӕgyptian Coptic and Theophylact. The TR is supported by papyrus 37, codices
א, A, B, C, D, L, Θ, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 28, 33, 700,
892, 1010 and 1424, the Syriac Sinaiticus, the Sahidic and Bohairic Coptic versions,
Cyril of Alexandria and Chrysostom. The support for the TR is more ancient and
more widespread.
[4] NA-Text reads “πλειω” (neuter instead of feminine).
[5] NA-Text omits “η”.
[6] NA-Text reads “λεγιωνας”. Same word, different spelling.
[7] NA-Text reads “εξηλθατε”, same verbal tense with a different spelling.
[8] NA-Text omits “with you”
