Matthew 26:69-75 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Matthew

Chapter 26


 

69. ο δε πετρος εξω εκαθητο εν τη αυλη και προσηλθεν αυτω μια παιδισκη λεγουσα και συ ησθα μετα ιησου του γαλιλαιου

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him, saying, “You were also with Jesus, the Galilean!”

70. ο δε ηρνησατο εμπροσθεν παντων λεγων ουκ οιδα τι λεγεις

But he denied it before them[1] all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.”

71. εξελθοντα δε αυτον[2] εις τον πυλωνα ειδεν αυτον αλλη και λεγει τοις[3] εκει και ουτος ην μετα ιησου του ναζωραιου

And when he had gone out into the porch, another saw him and said to those who were there, “This one was also[4] with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72. και παλιν ηρνησατο μετα[5] ορκου οτι ουκ οιδα τον ανθρωπον

And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.”

73. μετα μικρον δε προσελθοντες οι εστωτες ειπον τω πετρω αληθως και συ εξ αυτων ει και γαρ η λαλια σου δηλον σε ποιει

And after a little while those who stood by came and said to Peter, “Surely you are also one of them, for even your speech makes you known.”

74. τοτε ηρξατο καταθεματιζειν[6] και ομνυειν οτι ουκ οιδα τον ανθρωπον και ευθεως αλεκτωρ εφωνησεν

Then he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.

75. και εμνησθη ο πετρος του ρηματος του[7] ιησου ειρηκοτος αυτω οτι πριν αλεκτορα φωνησαι τρις απαρνηση με και εξελθων εξω εκλαυσεν πικρως

And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him[8], “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.



[1] M-Text adds the pronoun “them” (Gr.: “αυτων”) that is not found in the Greek text. The addition of the pronoun is supported by codices A, C*, K, W, Γ, Δ, 0133, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 565, 700c, 1241 and 1424, the Byzantine minuscules and Chrysostom. The non-inclusion is supported by codices א, B, C2, D, L, Z, Θ, 090, family of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscules 33, 700*, 892 and 1010 and Theophylact. The omission is very well supported across all text-types. The Greek text does not need correction.

[2] NA-Text omits “αυτον”, which is not a translatable difference in this context.

[3] M-Text reads “αυτοις”, which is supported by codices A, C, L, Γ, Δ, 0133, family of manuscripts ƒ1, 33, 700, 892, 1241, 1424, the Byzantine minuscules whereas “τοις” is supported by codices א, B, D, K, W, Θ, family of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscule 565 and Theophylact. The TR is very well supported by all text-types and does not need correction.

[4] NA-Text omits “also”.

[5] NA-Text reads “μετα”, same preposition, different spelling. This spelling is supported by codices א, A, B and Θ. The TR is supported by codex D, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The spelling has been adjusted to read like the NA-Text.

[6] NA-Text, M-Text and WPF35 read “καταθεματιζειν” instead of “καταναθεματιζειν”, which is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Chrysostom. Theophylact supports the TR and the PT. The Greek text has then been adjusted following the NA-Text and the M-Text.

[7] NA-Text, WPF35 and P-Text omit “του”, thus making the genitive without the article, which is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Theophylact. This is evidently a natural addition to the text. The article has been removed from the text following the NA-Text.

[8] NA-Text and VgSt omit “to him”. The omission is supported by codices א, B, D, L, minuscules 33 and 892, some manuscripts of the Sahidic Coptic version, Jerome and Chrysostom. The inclusion is supported by codices A, C, W, Θ, 0133, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, the Byzantine minuscules, 3 old Latin codices, the Syriac versions, the Coptic versions and Theophylact. The support for the inclusion is very good so the pronoun has been maintained in the text.
