Matthew 27:11-26 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Matthew

Chapter 27


 

11. ο δε ιησους εστη[1] εμπροσθεν του ηγεμονος και επηρωτησεν αυτον ο ηγεμων λεγων συ ει ο βασιλευς των ιουδαιων ο δε ιησους εφη αυτω συ λεγεις

Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him[2], “You say it.”

12. και εν τω κατηγορεισθαι αυτον υπο των αρχιερεων και των πρεσβυτερων ουδεν απεκρινατο

And when he was accused by the chief priests and the[3] elders, he answered nothing.

13. τοτε λεγει αυτω ο πιλατος ουκ ακουεις ποσα σου καταμαρτυρουσιν

Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?”

14. και ουκ απεκριθη αυτω προς ουδε εν ρημα ωστε θαυμαζειν τον ηγεμονα λιαν

And he did not answer him, not even one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.

15. κατα δε εορτην ειωθει ο ηγεμων απολυειν ενα τω οχλω δεσμιον ον ηθελον

Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished.

16. ειχον δε τοτε δεσμιον επισημον λεγομενον βαραββαν

And they had then a notorious prisoner called [4] Barabbas.

17. συνηγμενων ουν αυτων ειπεν αυτοις ο πιλατος τινα θελετε απολυσω υμιν βαραββαν η ιησουν τον λεγομενον χριστον

Therefore when they were assembled, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? [5] Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”

18. ηδει γαρ οτι δια φθονον παρεδωκαν αυτον

For he knew that because of envy they had delivered him up.

19. καθημενου δε αυτου επι του βηματος απεστειλεν προς αυτον η γυνη αυτου λεγουσα μηδεν σοι και τω δικαιω εκεινω πολλα γαρ επαθον σημερον κατ οναρ δι αυτον

But as he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous one, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of him.”

20. οι δε αρχιερεις και οι πρεσβυτεροι επεισαν τους οχλους ινα αιτησωνται τον βαραββαν τον δε ιησουν απολεσωσιν

Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.

21. αποκριθεις δε ο ηγεμων ειπεν αυτοις τινα θελετε απο των δυο απολυσω υμιν οι δε ειπον[6] βαραββαν

But answering, the governor said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” And they said, “Barabbas!”

22. λεγει αυτοις ο πιλατος τι ουν ποιησω ιησουν τον λεγομενον χριστον λεγουσιν παντες σταυρωθητω

Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do to Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said[7], “Let him be crucified!”

23. ο δε ηγεμων εφη τι γαρ κακον εποιησεν οι δε περισσως εκραζον λεγοντες σταυρωθητω

But the governor[8] said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, saying, “Let him be crucified!”

24. ιδων δε ο πιλατος οτι ουδεν ωφελει αλλα μαλλον θορυβος γινεται λαβων υδωρ απενιψατο τας χειρας απεναντι του οχλου λεγων αθωος ειμι απο του αιματος του δικαιου τουτου υμεις οψεσθε

So when Pilate saw that nothing was being gained, but rather that a tumult was beginning, he took water and washed the hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous[9] one. You see to it.”

25. και αποκριθεις πας ο λαος ειπεν το αιμα αυτου εφ ημας και επι τα τεκνα ημων

And answering, all the people said, “His blood be on us and on our children!”

26. τοτε απελυσεν αυτοις τον βαραββαν τον δε ιησουν φραγελλωσας παρεδωκεν ινα σταυρωθη

Then he released Barabbas to them, but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified.



[1] NA-Text reads “εσταθη” (aorist passive instead of second aorist active)

[2] NA-Text omits “to him”.

[3] NA-Text omits the definite article before “elders”.

[4] NA-Text adds “Jesus” in brackets and renders “[Jesus] Barabbas”. The collective witness of the majuscules, including codices Sinaiticus and Vaticanus, and the minuscules is overwhelmingly against receiving as possibly part of the text this intrusion that Origen found in some copies.

[5] NA-Text adds “Jesus” in brackets and renders “[Jesus] Barabbas”. See previous footnote.

[6] NA-Text reads “ειπαν τον”. Same verbal tense with a different spelling plus the inclusion of a definite article before the proper name Barabbas.

[7] NA-Text and VgSt omit “to him” (Gr. “αυτω”). The omission is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Jerome. The inclusion is supported by the Byzantine minuscules and Theophylact. The pronoun appears to have been a natural scribal addition in the Byzantine text. The pronoun has then been removed from the Greek text and the translation.

[8] NA-Text omits “the governor” and renders “But he said”.

[9] NA-Text omits “righteous”.
