Mark 1:40-45 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Mark

Chapter 1

40. και ερχεται προς αυτον λεπρος παρακαλων αυτον και γονυπετων αυτον και λεγων αυτω οτι εαν θελης δυνασαι με καθαρισαι

And a leper came to him, begging him and kneeling down to him[1], and saying to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.”

41. ο δε[2] ιησους σπλαγχνισθεις εκτεινας την χειρα ηψατο αυτου και λεγει αυτω θελω καθαρισθητι

And Jesus[3], moved with compassion, stretched out the hand and touched him, and said to him, “I will. Be clean.”

42. και ειποντος αυτου ευθεως[4] απηλθεν απ αυτου η λεπρα και εκαθαρισθη

And when he had said this[5], immediately the leprosy departed from him and he was made clean.

43. και εμβριμησαμενος αυτω ευθεως[6] εξεβαλεν αυτον

And strictly warning him, he immediately sent him away,

44. και λεγει αυτω ορα μηδενι μηδεν ειπης αλλ[7] υπαγε σεαυτον δειξον τω ιερει και προσενεγκε περι του καθαρισμου σου α προσεταξεν μωσης[8] εις μαρτυριον αυτοις

and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing the things which Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.”

45. ο δε εξελθων ηρξατο κηρυσσειν πολλα και διαφημιζειν τον λογον ωστε μηκετι αυτον δυνασθαι φανερως εις πολιν εισελθειν αλλ εξω εν[9] ερημοις τοποις ην και ηρχοντο προς αυτον παντοθεν[10]

But he went out, and began to proclaim it widely, and to spread about the matter, so that He[11] could no longer openly enter a city but was outside in deserted places. And they were coming to him from every quarter.

[1] NA-Text brackets “kneeling down” and omits “to him”. The omission is most likely due to a scribal error caused by parablepsis (και γονυπετων αυτον και, thus missing “and kneeling down” or “and kneeling down to him”). This verb occurs again in Mark 10:17 and it contains an indirect object. The same verb occurs twice in Matthew (17:14 and 27:29). In all instances the verb is accompanied by an indirect object. Therefore, it is not safe to omit the pronoun here.

[2] NA-Text reads “και”, placing it before the verb at the beginning of the verse. The meaning is the same.

[3] NA-Text omits “Jesus”.

[4] NA-Text reads “ευθυς”. Same meaning.

[5] NA-Text omits “when he had said this”.

[6] NA-Text reads “ευθυς”. Same meaning.

[7] NA-Text reads “αλλα”.

[8] NA-Text reads “μωυσης”.

[9] NA-Text reads “επ” (“on” instead of “in”)

[10] NA-Text reads “παντοθεν”, which is supported by codices א, A, B, D and Θ. The TR is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The Greek text has been adjusted to read in accordance with the NA-Text.

[11] The proper name “Jesus” has been added to this verse in English translations starting with William Tyndale to avoid confusion between the leper and Jesus. The vulgate of Jerome, John Wycliffe and Martin Luther translations did not add it. The pronoun has been capitalized here to distinguish between Jesus and the leper.
