Matthew 27:1-10 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 27


 

1. πρωιας δε γενομενης συμβουλιον ελαβον παντες οι αρχιερεις και οι πρεσβυτεροι του λαου κατα του ιησου ωστε θανατωσαι αυτον

Now when morning had come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.

2. και δησαντες αυτον απηγαγον και παρεδωκαν αυτον ποντιω πιλατω τω ηγεμονι

And they bound him, led him away, and delivered him[1] to Pontius[2] Pilate, the governor.

3. τοτε ιδων ιουδας ο παραδιδους αυτον οτι κατεκριθη μεταμεληθεις απεστρεψεν[3] τα τριακοντα αργυρια τοις αρχιερευσιν και τοις[4] πρεσβυτεροις

Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that he had been condemned, repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,

4. λεγων ημαρτον παραδους αιμα αθωον οι δε ειπον[5] τι προς ημας συ οψη[6]

saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? You see to it.”

5. και ριψας τα αργυρια εν τω ναω[7] ανεχωρησεν και απελθων απηγξατο

And he threw the pieces of silver down in the temple and departed. And he went and hanged himself.

6. οι δε αρχιερεις λαβοντες τα αργυρια ειπον ουκ εξεστιν βαλειν αυτα εις τον κορβαναν επει τιμη αιματος εστιν

And the chief priests taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.”

7. συμβουλιον δε λαβοντες ηγορασαν εξ αυτων τον αγρον του κεραμεως εις ταφην τοις ξενοις

And they took counsel and bought the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.

8. διο εκληθη ο αγρος εκεινος αγρος αιματος εως της σημερον

Therefore that field has been called “The Field of Blood” to this day.

9. τοτε επληρωθη το ρηθεν δια ιερεμιου του προφητου λεγοντος και ελαβον τα τριακοντα αργυρια την τιμην του τετιμημενου ον ετιμησαντο απο υιων ισραηλ

Then was fulfilled what was spoken through Jeremiah[8] the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him upon whom some of the sons of Israel had set a price,

10. και εδωκαν αυτα εις τον αγρον του κεραμεως καθα συνεταξεν μοι κυριος

and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”



[1] NA-Text and VgSt omit “him”. The omission of the pronoun is supported by codices א, B, C*, K, L and minuscule 33 and Theophylact. The inclusion is supported by codices A, (C), W, Θ, 0250, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, the Byzantine minuscules and Jerome (Latin: “Et vinctum adduxerunt, et tradiderunt eum Pontio Pilato praesidia – note: Jerome still has just one personal pronoun in the sentence by placing it after the verb “delivered”). The parallel passage in Mark 15:1 omits the pronoun after this verb and because the wording is different, harmonization to exclude the pronoun is less likely. Therefore, the pronoun has been removed, even though this adjustment to the Greek text does not change the translation.

[2] NA-Text omits “Pontius”.

[3] NA-Text reads “εστρεψεν”. Both verbs can mean the same thing.

[4] NA-Text omits the definite article “the” before “elders”.

[5] NA-Text reads “ειπαν”. Same verbal tense with a different spelling.

[6] NA-Text reads “οψη”. Same verbal tense with a different spelling. The Alexandrian spelling is supported by codices א, A, B, Θ and part of the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by part of the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. This spelling has been adjusted in conformity to the NA-Text.

[7] NA-Text reads “εις τον ναον” (accusative instead of dative with an interchangeable preposition).

[8] Origen suspected that “Jeremiah” was possibly a scribal error which mistook “Jeremiah” for “Zechariah”. Augustine witnessed that the name Jeremiah was not found in all codices. And the omission of the proper name is found in Epiphanius’ manuscript (Panarion, 38:7:6), the Diatessaron and the Peshitta. On the other hand, the Greek majuscules unanimously read “Jeremiah” and so do virtually all minuscules with a few exceptions like minuscules 21, 22, 33, 157 and 1579. Commenting on this apparent contradiction, Jerome says the following: “This prophecy does not come from Jeremiah but from a similar passage in Zechariah (Zech 11:12-13) who is almost the last of the twelve prophets. Although the meaning does not differ much, Zechariah’s word order and vocabulary do conflict with Matthew’s quotation. In a copy of the Hebrew Scriptures given to me by a member of the Nazarene sect, I recently read an apocryphal edition of the book of Jeremiah in which this quotation from Matthew appeared word for word. Nevertheless, it still seems more likely to me that Matthew took this prophecy from Zechariah, since it was the ordinary practice of the Evangelists and apostles to communicate only the meaning of texts from the Old Testament while neglecting to observe their word order”.
