Matthew 27:45-56 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Matthew

Chapter 27


 

45. απο δε εκτης ωρας σκοτος εγενετο επι πασαν την γην εως ωρας ενατης[1]

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.

46. περι δε την ενατην[2] ωραν ανεβοησεν ο ιησους φωνη μεγαλη λεγων ηλι ηλι λαμα σαβαχθανι τουτ εστιν θεε μου θεε μου ινα τι με εγκατελιπες

And from the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama[3] sabachthani?”  That is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

47. τινες δε των εκει εστωτων[4] ακουσαντες ελεγον οτι ηλιαν φωνει ουτος

And some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said, “This one is calling Elijah.

48. και ευθεως δραμων εις εξ αυτων και λαβων σπογγον πλησας τε οξους και περιθεις καλαμω εποτιζεν αυτον

And immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar and put it on a reed, and gave him a drink.

49. οι δε λοιποι ελεγον αφες ιδωμεν ει ερχεται ηλιας σωσων αυτον

And the rest said, “Leave him alone. Let us see whether Elijah comes to save him.”

50. ο δε ιησους παλιν κραξας φωνη μεγαλη αφηκεν το πνευμα

And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded the spirit.

51. και ιδου το καταπετασμα του ναου εσχισθη εις δυο απο[5] ανωθεν εως κατω και η γη εσεισθη και αι πετραι εσχισθησαν

And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.

52. και τα μνημεια ανεωχθησαν και πολλα σωματα των κεκοιμημενων αγιων ηγερθη[6]

And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;

53. και εξελθοντες εκ των μνημειων μετα την εγερσιν αυτου εισηλθον εις την αγιαν πολιν και ενεφανισθησαν πολλοις

and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

54. ο δε εκατονταρχος και οι μετ αυτου τηρουντες τον ιησουν ιδοντες τον σεισμον και τα γενομενα εφοβηθησαν σφοδρα λεγοντες αληθως θεου υιος ην ουτος

Now the centurion and those who were with him keeping watch over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that took place, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

55. ησαν δε εκει γυναικες πολλαι απο μακροθεν θεωρουσαι αιτινες ηκολουθησαν τω ιησου απο της γαλιλαιας διακονουσαι αυτω

And many women were there, watching from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him.

56. εν αις ην μαρια η μαγδαληνη και μαρια η του ιακωβου και ιωση μητηρ και η μητηρ των υιων ζεβεδαιου

Among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joses[7], and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.



[1] NA-Text and M-Text read “ενατης”, same word, different spelling. This spelling is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ, the Byzantine minuscules and Chrysostom. The TR is supported by Theophylact. The Greek text has been adjusted following the NA-Text and the M-Text in verses 45 and 46.

[3] M-Text reads “λιμα”, which is supported by codices A, U, W, Γ, Δ, Π, 090, family of manuscripts ƒ13, the Byzantine minuscules, 2 old Latin codices (itf and itq) and Chrysostom. NA-Text and VgSt read “λεμα” (Latin equivalent: “lema”), which is supported by codices א, B, L, minuscules 33, 700, 892, 998 and 1010, the old Latin codex itff1 and some manuscripts of the Bohairic Coptic version. The TR is supported by codices D, Θ, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 22, 565 and 1582, 3 old Latin codices (itb, itff2 and ith), middle Ӕgyptian Coptic, Jerome (Latin: “Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani”) and Theophylact. Some manuscripts read “λειμα” (E, F, G, H, M, S and V). The TR is well supported by a diversity of witnesses and does not need correction.

[4] NA-Text reads “εστηκοτων”, same verbal tense spelled differently.

[5] NA-Text reads “απ”, a contracted form of the same preposition.

[6] NA-Text and VgSt read “ηγερθησαν” (Latin equivalent: “surrexerunt”, plural instead of singular). The plural form is supported by codices א, B, D, L, Θ, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscule 33 and Jerome. The singular form is supported by codices A, C, W, 090, the Byzantine minuscules, Chrysostom and Theophylact. The Byzantine reading has maintained the harder reading and should be preferred here.

[7] NA-Text and VgSt read “Joseph”, which is supported by codices (א), D*, L, W, Θ, 157, the Old Latin version, the Syriac Sinaiticus, a marginal note in the Harklean Syriac version, the Coptic versions and Jerome. The Byzantine reading is supported by codices A, B, C, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 33, 565, 700 and 892, the Byzantine minuscules, the Peshitta, the Harklean Syriac version and some manuscripts of the Sahidic Coptic version, the Diatessaron, Eusebius, Chrysostom and Theophylact. Both forms are well supported.
