Luke 9:10-17 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 9




10. και υποστρεψαντες οι αποστολοι διηγησαντο αυτω οσα εποιησαν και παραλαβων αυτους υπεχωρησεν κατ ιδιαν εις τοπον ερημον πολεως καλουμενης βηθσαιδα[1]

And when the apostles had returned, they told him all that they had done. Then he took them and went aside privately into a deserted place of a city called Bethsaida[2].

11. οι δε οχλοι γνοντες ηκολουθησαν αυτω και δεξαμενος[3] αυτους ελαλει αυτοις περι της βασιλειας του θεου και τους χρειαν εχοντας θεραπειας ιατο

But the multitudes, perceiving it, followed him. And he received them, spoke to them of the kingdom of God, and he healed those who had need of healing.

12. η δε ημερα ηρξατο κλινειν προσελθοντες δε οι δωδεκα ειπον[4] αυτω απολυσον τον οχλον ινα πορευθεντες[5] εις τας κυκλω κωμας και τους[6] αγρους καταλυσωσιν και ευρωσιν επισιτισμον οτι ωδε εν ερημω τοπω εσμεν

And the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and farms and lodge and get food, for we are in a deserted place here.”

13. ειπεν δε προς αυτους δοτε αυτοις υμεις φαγειν οι δε ειπον[7] ουκ εισιν ημιν πλειον η πεντε αρτοι και ιχθυες δυο ει μητι πορευθεντες ημεις αγορασωμεν εις παντα τον λαον τουτον βρωματα

But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people.”

14. ησαν γαρ ωσει ανδρες πεντακισχιλιοι ειπεν δε προς τους μαθητας αυτου κατακλινατε αυτους κλισιας [8] ανα πεντηκοντα

For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of fifty each.”

15. και εποιησαν ουτως και ανεκλιναν[9] απαντας

And they did so and made them all sit down.

16. λαβων δε τους πεντε αρτους και τους δυο ιχθυας αναβλεψας εις τον ουρανον ευλογησεν αυτους και κατεκλασεν και εδιδου τοις μαθηταις παραθειναι[10] τω οχλω

And he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude.

17. και εφαγον και εχορτασθησαν παντες και ηρθη το περισσευσαν αυτοις κλασματων κοφινοι δωδεκα

And they ate and were all filled. And they gathered up twelve baskets of fragments that were left over.



[1] M-Text reads “βηθσαιδαν”, which is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by codices B, D, Θ and Theophylact. No need of correction.

[2] NA-Text omits “into a deserted place” and renders “went aside privately to a city called Bethsaida”.

[3] NA-Text reads “αποδεξαμενος” (to welcome).

[4] NA-Text reads “ειπαν”. Same verbal tense, different spelling.

[5] NA-Text and P-Text read “πορευθεντες”, which is supported by codices א, A, B, and D. The TR is supported by codex Θ, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The Byzantine “απελθοντες” may have been transferred from the parallel passages in Matthew 14:15 and Mark 6:36. The text has then been adjusted following the NA-Text.

[6] NA-Text omits “τους”. The inclusion of the article is very well supported by all text types.

[7] NA-Text reads “ειπαν”. Same verbal tense, different spelling.

[8] NA-Text reads “ωσει” (about) in brackets.

[9] NA-Text reads “κατεκλιναν”. Those two verbs can be used interchangeably.

[10] NA-Text and P-Text read “παραθειναι” (second aorist active instead of aorist passive), which is supported by papyrus 75, codices א, B, C, N, Θ, Ψ, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 579, 700, 1241 and 2542. The passive voice is supported by codices A, D, L, W, Ξ, family of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscule 33, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The support for the NA-Text is slightly better, so the active voice has been adopted in the Greek text.
