Chapter 6
27. αλλα[1] υμιν
λεγω τοις ακουουσιν αγαπατε τους εχθρους υμων καλως ποιειτε τοις μισουσιν
υμας “But I say to you who hear: love your enemies, do
good to those who hate you, |
28. ευλογειτε τους
καταρωμενους υμας[2]
προσευχεσθε υπερ των επηρεαζοντων υμας bless those who curse you, [3] pray for those who
mistreat you. |
29. τω τυπτοντι σε επι την
σιαγονα παρεχε και την αλλην και απο του αιροντος σου το ιματιον και τον
χιτωνα μη κωλυσης And to him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also
the other; and from him who takes away your garment, do not withhold your tunic
also. |
30. παντι δε τω[4]
αιτουντι σε διδου και απο του αιροντος τα σα μη απαιτει Give to everyone who asks of you, and from him who
takes away your goods do not ask them back. |
31. και καθως θελετε ινα
ποιωσιν υμιν οι ανθρωποι και υμεις[5]
ποιειτε αυτοις ομοιως “As you desire that men should do to you, you also do
to them likewise. |
32. και ει αγαπατε τους
αγαπωντας υμας ποια υμιν χαρις εστιν και γαρ οι αμαρτωλοι τους αγαπωντας
αυτους αγαπωσιν “But if you love those who love you, what credit is
that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. |
33. και [6] εαν
αγαθοποιητε τους αγαθοποιουντας υμας ποια υμιν χαρις εστιν και γαρ οι
αμαρτωλοι το αυτο ποιουσιν And if you do good to those who do good to you, what
credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. |
34. και εαν δανειζητε[7] παρ
ων ελπιζητε απολαβειν[8] ποια
υμιν χαρις εστιν[9] και
γαρ [10]
αμαρτωλοι αμαρτωλοις δανειζουσιν[11] ινα
απολαβωσιν τα ισα And if you lend to those from whom you hope to
receive, what credit is that to you? For[12] even sinners lend to
sinners, to receive back as much. |
35. πλην αγαπατε τους
εχθρους υμων και αγαθοποιειτε και δανειζετε[13] μηδεν
απελπιζοντες και εσται ο μισθος υμων πολυς και εσεσθε υιοι [14]
υψιστου οτι αυτος χρηστος εστιν επι τους αχαριστους και πονηρους But love your enemies, and do good, and lend,
expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons
of the Most High. For he is kind to the unthankful and evil. |
36. γινεσθε ουν οικτιρμονες
καθως και ο πατηρ υμων οικτιρμων εστιν “Therefore[15] be merciful, even as your Father is also[16] merciful. |

the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The TR is supported by part of the
Byzantine manuscripts. The spelling in the Greek text has been adjusted
following the NA-Text.

read “υμας” (accusative instead of dative), which is supported
by codices א, B, D, part of the Byzantine
manuscripts and Theophylact. The dative is supported by codex Θ and part of the
Byzantine manuscripts. The Greek text has been adjusted, following the NA-Text.
[3] NA-Text, P-Text, WPF35
and M-text omit “and” (και), which is supported by
codices א, D, B, Θ and the
Byzantine manuscripts. The inclusion is supported by Theophylact. This
conjunction has been removed from the Greek text, following the NA-text and the
M-Text.
[4] NA-Text omits “δε τω”
[5] NA-Text omits “και
υμεις”
(you also). The collective witness of majuscules of all text-types, including
codex Sinaiticus, the minuscules and the versions is overwhelmingly against
this omission.
[6] NA-Text moves “γαρ” to the second sentence,
which is a scribal adjustment to the text at a local level.
[7] NA-Text reads “δανισητε” (aorist instead of present).
[8] NA-Text reads “λαβειν”. Those two verbs can be used interchangeably.
[9] NA-Text brackets “εστιν”. The inclusion is supported by all text-types,
including codex Sinaiticus.
[10] NA-Text, WPF35,
P-Text and M-Text omit the definite article “οι”,
which is supported by codices א, B, D,
Θ and
the Byzantine manuscripts. The inclusion is supported by Theophylact. The
article has been dropped in the Greek text.
[11] NA-Text reads “δανιζουσιν”. Same verbal tense, different spelling.
[12] NA-Text omits “For”.
[13] NA-Text reads “δανιζετε”. Same verbal tense, different spelling.
[14] NA-Text, P-Text, WPF35
and M-Text omit “του”, which is supported by
codices א, B, D and the Byzantine manuscripts.
The inclusion is supported by codex Θ and Theophylact. The article has been
removed from the Greek text.
[15] NA-Text omits “Therefore”,
which is possibly due to a scribal error caused by visual homoeoarcton (ουν
οικτιρμονες, thus missing “Therefore”).
[16] NA-Text brackets “also”, which is likely a scribal error caused by visual homoeoarcton in Alexandrian majuscules (καθως και, thus missing “also”). The other text types, the Latin scriptures, the Diatessaron reflecting a text from the 100’s, Cyprian’s text (Epistle 51:16) in the 200’s and Basil’s in the 300’s, which are not influenced by this error found in the Alexandrian text, all contain the conjunction. This is a typical Lukan construction not used by any other evangelist.
