Luke 6:20-26 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 6




20. και αυτος επαρας τους οφθαλμους αυτου εις τους μαθητας αυτου ελεγεν μακαριοι οι πτωχοι οτι υμετερα εστιν η βασιλεια του θεου

And he lifted up his eyes to his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

21. μακαριοι οι πεινωντες νυν οτι χορτασθησεσθε μακαριοι οι κλαιοντες νυν οτι γελασετε

Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

22. μακαριοι εστε οταν μισησωσιν υμας οι ανθρωποι και οταν αφορισωσιν υμας και ονειδισωσιν και εκβαλωσιν το ονομα υμων ως πονηρον ενεκα του υιου του ανθρωπου

Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude and revile you, and throw out your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.

23. χαρητε[1] εν εκεινη τη ημερα και σκιρτησατε ιδου γαρ ο μισθος υμων πολυς εν τω ουρανω κατα ταυτα[2] γαρ εποιουν τοις προφηταις οι πατερες αυτων

Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven, for so did their fathers to the prophets.

24. πλην ουαι υμιν τοις πλουσιοις οτι απεχετε την παρακλησιν υμων

“But woe to you who are rich! For you have received your consolation.

25. ουαι υμιν οι εμπεπλησμενοι [3] οτι πεινασετε ουαι υμιν[4] οι γελωντες νυν οτι πενθησετε και κλαυσετε

Woe to you who are full, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.

26. ουαι [5] οταν καλως υμας ειπωσιν παντες[6] οι ανθρωποι κατα ταυτα[7] γαρ εποιουν τοις ψευδοπροφηταις οι πατερες αυτων

Woe to you, when all men speak well of you, for so did their fathers to the false prophets.



[1] NA-Text, P-Text, WPF35 and M-Text read “χαρητε” (second aorist passive deponent instead of present active), which is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ (χαρηται) and the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by Theophylact. The Greek text has been adjusted following the NA-Text and the M-Text.

[2] NA-Text reads “τα αυτα” (the same things). Origen in the 200’s quoted the Byzantine text verbatim (Commentary on Matthew, Book 10, chapter 18).

[3] NA-Text adds “νυν” (now). This is a natural addition to the text to mimic the same “now” of the next sentence.

[4] NA-Text omits “υμιν” (omission of “to you” after “woe”).

[5] NA-Text, P-Text, WPF35, M-Text and Vg-St omit “υμιν” (to you), which is supported by codices א, B, Θ, the Byzantin manuscripts and Theophylact. The inclusion is supported by codices D, W*, Δ, minuscule 1424, the old Latin codices itb and itr1, the Syriac Sinaiticus, the Peshitta, the Coptic versions, the Diatessaron and Irenaeuslat. This is likely a natural addition to the text to replicate the same formula used in verses 24 and 25. “υμιν” has been removed from the Greek text, following the NA-Text and the M-Text, even though "to you" has been maintained in the translation for the sake of readability in English.

[6] M-Text omits “παντες” (all), which is supported by codices D, L, Γ, Δ, minuscules 28, 892*, 1010, 1216, 1242, 1344, 2174 part of the Byzantine manuscripts, the old Latin codex itd, the Syriac Sinaiticus, the Peshitta, the Ethiopic version, some copies of the Bohairic Coptic version, the Diatessaron and Tertullian. The inclusion is supported by papyrus 75, codices א, A, B, K, P, W, X, Θ, Ξ, Π, Ψ, family of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscules 33, 565, 700, a marginal note in minuscules 892, minuscules 1009, 1071, 1079, 1195, 1230, 1241, 1253 (παντα), 1365, 1546, 1646, part of the Byzantine manuscripts, the old Latin codices ita, itaur, itb, itc, ite, itf, itff2, itl and itq, the Harklean Syriac, the Gothic, the Armenian, the Georgian version, Irenaeuslat, Basil, Chrysostom and Theophylact. The support for the inclusion is superior. There is nothing in the context of these 7 verses or a parallel passage to justify the insertion of this word in so many witnesses in different transmission lines, if it is not original. This word belongs in the text. It was possibly removed because “all” is not necessary to create a general rule when the plural “men” is employed, for which scribes would have found a similar pattern in verse 22 where the word “all” is not juxtaposed to “men”.
