Luke 8:19-25 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

19. παρεγενοντο[1] δε προς αυτον η μητηρ και οι αδελφοι αυτου και ουκ ηδυναντο συντυχειν αυτω δια τον οχλον

And his mother and brothers came to him, and they could not come near him for the crowd.

20. και[2] απηγγελη αυτω [3] η μητηρ σου και οι αδελφοι σου εστηκασιν εξω ιδειν σε θελοντες

And it was told him, “Your mother and your brothers stand outside, desiring to see you.”

21. ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν προς αυτους μητηρ μου και αδελφοι μου ουτοι εισιν οι τον λογον του θεου ακουοντες και ποιουντες[4]

But answering, he said to them, “My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.”

22. εγενετο δε[5] εν μια των ημερων και αυτος ενεβη εις πλοιον και οι μαθηται αυτου και ειπεν προς αυτους διελθωμεν εις το περαν της λιμνης και ανηχθησαν

And it happened on one of those days, that he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they launched out.

23. πλεοντων δε αυτων αφυπνωσεν και κατεβη λαιλαψ ανεμου εις την λιμνην και συνεπληρουντο και εκινδυνευον

But as they sailed, he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were being filled with water and were in danger.

24. προσελθοντες δε διηγειραν αυτον λεγοντες επιστατα επιστατα απολλυμεθα ο δε εγερθεις[6] επετιμησεν τω ανεμω και τω κλυδωνι του υδατος και επαυσαντο και εγενετο γαληνη

And they came to him and awoke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was calm.

25. ειπεν δε αυτοις που [7] η πιστις υμων φοβηθεντες δε εθαυμασαν λεγοντες προς αλληλους τις αρα ουτος εστιν οτι και τοις ανεμοις επιτασσει και τω υδατι και υπακουουσιν αυτω

And he said to them, “Where is your faith?” And being afraid, they marveled, saying to one another, “Who is this then, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?”



[1] NA-Text reads “παρεγενετο” (singular instead of plural).

[2] NA-Text reads “δε”, placing the conjunction after the verb.

[3] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “λεγοντων”, which is supported by papyrus 75, codices א, B, D, L, W, Δ, Θ, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 33, 579, 892, 1241 and the old Latin codices. The inclusion is supported by codices A, Ξ, Ψ, family of manuscripts ƒ13,minuscule 1424, the Harklean Syriac version, the old Latin codex itr1 and Theophylact. The support for the omission is excellent. This word is suggestive of natural addition to the text similarly to the previous verse 9. This word has then been removed from the Greek text and the translation.

[4] NA-Text and Vg-St omit the pronoun “αυτον”. The omission is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Theophylact. The pronoun was added to read the verb “hear” and “do” in two separate clauses. It has been removed from the Greek text.

[5] NA-Text and Vg-St read “δε” (Latin equivalent: “autem”) instead of “και”, placing the conjunction after the verb, which is supported by codices א, B, D and Θ. The TR is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The meaning is the same, but the support for the Alexandrian arrangement is better and has been adopted in the Greek text.

[6] NA-Text reads “διεγερθεις”, which is supported by codices א, B and Θ. The TR Is supported by codices D, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The Alexandrian verb can be the product of harmonization to the parallel passage in Mark 4:39 or the Byzantine verb can be the result of a parabletic error (δε διεγερθεις, thus missing “δι”). Due to the risk of harmonization, this is not a safe correction to the text. The meaning of both verbs is interchangeable.

[7] NA-Text omits “εστιν”, which is supported by papyrus 75vid, codices א, A, B, L, W, Θ, Ψ, manuscripts 1, 579, 700, 892* and 2542. The inclusion is supported by codices D, family of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscule 33, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The support for the omission is compelling. This verb can be implicit in koine Greek. It was probably added to clarify what was implicit. The verb has then been removed from the Greek text, following the NA-Text.
