Luke 8:9-18 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 8




9. επηρωτων δε αυτον οι μαθηται αυτου τις ειη η παραβολη αυτη

Then his disciples asked him [1], “What does this parable mean?”

10. ο δε ειπεν υμιν δεδοται γνωναι τα μυστηρια της βασιλειας του θεου τοις δε λοιποις εν παραβολαις ινα βλεποντες μη βλεπωσιν και ακουοντες μη συνιωσιν

And he said, “To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’

11. εστιν δε αυτη η παραβολη ο σπορος εστιν ο λογος του θεου

“Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

12. οι δε παρα την οδον εισιν οι ακουοντες[2] ειτα ερχεται ο διαβολος και αιρει τον λογον απο της καρδιας αυτων ινα μη πιστευσαντες σωθωσιν

And those by the wayside are those who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, lest they should believe and be saved.

13. οι δε επι της πετρας οι οταν ακουσωσιν μετα χαρας δεχονται τον λογον και ουτοι ριζαν ουκ εχουσιν οι προς καιρον πιστευουσιν και εν καιρω πειρασμου αφιστανται

And those on the rock are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but these have no root. They believe for a while, then fall away in time of temptation.

14. το δε εις τας ακανθας πεσον ουτοι εισιν οι ακουσαντες και υπο μεριμνων και πλουτου και ηδονων του βιου πορευομενοι συμπνιγονται και ου τελεσφορουσιν

And the ones that fell among the thorns, these are those who, when they have heard, they go on their way and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of life, and they bring no fruit to maturity.

15. το δε εν τη καλη γη ουτοι εισιν οιτινες εν καρδια καλη και αγαθη ακουσαντες τον λογον κατεχουσιν και καρποφορουσιν εν υπομονη

And those in the good ground, these are those who, having heard the word, hold it fast with an honest and good heart and bear fruit with patience.

16. ουδεις δε λυχνον αψας καλυπτει αυτον σκευει η υποκατω κλινης τιθησιν αλλ επι λυχνιας επιτιθησιν[3] ινα οι εισπορευομενοι βλεπωσιν το φως

“And no one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but he sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light.

17. ου γαρ εστιν κρυπτον ο ου φανερον γενησεται ουδε αποκρυφον ο ου γνωσθησεται[4] και εις φανερον ελθη

For nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light.

18. βλεπετε ουν πως ακουετε ος γαρ αν[5] εχη δοθησεται αυτω και ος αν μη εχη και ο δοκει εχειν αρθησεται απ αυτου

Therefore be careful how you hear. For whoever has, to him will be given; and whoever does not have, from him will be taken away even what he seems to have.”



[1] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “saying”, which is supported by papyrus 75, codices א, B, D, L, W, Ξ, minuscules 1, 33, 579, 700, 1241, 1424 and 2542, the Syriac Sinaiticus, the Curetonian Syriac, the Peshitta and the Bohairic and Sahidic Coptic versions.  The inclusion is supported by codices A, Θ, Ψ, family of manuscripts ƒ13, the Byzantine manuscrips, the old Latin codices itf, itl and itq, the Harklean Syriac and Theophylact. This is a natural addition to the text once it is used quite often by the evangelists. It has been removed from the text, following the NA-Text.

[2] NA-Text and P-Text read “ακουσαντες” (aorist instead of present), which is supported by codices א, B and D. The present tense is supported by codex Θ, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact.  No need of correction.

[3] NA-Text reads “τιθησιν” (“set” instead of “set on”).

[4] NA-Text reads “μη γνωσθη” (aorist subjunctive instead of future indicative plus the emphatic negation).

[5] M-Text reads “εαν” (twice in the verse). The TR is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Theophylact. The reading in the TR stands as the correct reading.
