Luke 19:41-48 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Luke

Chapter 19

And when he came near, he saw the city and wept over it,

saying, “If you had known, even you, even at least[2] in this day of yours[3] the things that make for your[4] peace! But now, they are hidden from your eyes.

For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you, surround you, hem you in on every side,

and will dash you and your children within you to the ground. And they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

And entering the temple, he began to drive out those who bought and[7] sold in it,

saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer[8],’ but you have made it a ‘den of robbers’!”

And he was teaching daily in the temple, but the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people were seeking to destroy him.

And they could not find what they might do, for all the people were clinging to him and listening.

[1] NA-Text reads “αυτην” (accusative instead of dative), which is supported by codices א, A, B, D and Θ. The TR is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The accusative has been adopted in the Greek text.

[2] NA-Text omits “even at least” (Gr.: “και γε”). The Alexandrian construction appears to be a simplification.

[3] NA-Text omits “of yours”.

[4] NA-Text omits “your” and renders “the peace”.

[5] NA-Text reads “παρεμβαλουσιν”. Same verbal tense, different spelling.

[6] NA-Text reads “λιθον” (accusative instead of dative).

[7] NA-Text omits “bought and”, which is due to a scribal error in the Alexandrian transmission line caused by visual homoeuteleuton (πωλουντας εν αυτω και αγοραζοντας, thus missing “bought and”). Harmonization to Matthew 21:12 and Mark 11:15 to account for the longer reading is unlikely, because it is easier to see a simple scribal error in one transmission line than positing that everybody in all other transmission lines and the Latin scriptures have all come up with the same idea of harmonizing these passages.

[8] NA-Text reads “And my house shall be a house of prayer”.
