The gospel according to Luke
Chapter 19
1. και
εισελθων διηρχετο την ιεριχω Then he entered and was passing through Jericho. |
2. και
ιδου ανηρ ονοματι καλουμενος ζακχαιος και αυτος[1] ην αρχιτελωνης
και ουτος ην πλουσιος And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax
collector, and he was rich. |
3. και
εζητει ιδειν τον ιησουν τις εστιν και ουκ ηδυνατο απο του οχλου οτι τη ηλικια
μικρος ην And he was trying to see who Jesus was, but could not because of
the crowd, for he was of short stature. |
4. και
προδραμων [2] εμπροσθεν ανεβη επι
συκομορεαν[3] ινα ιδη αυτον οτι [4] εκεινης ημελλεν[5] διερχεσθαι And running on ahead, he climbed up into a sycamore tree to see
him, for he was going to pass that way. |
5. και
ως ηλθεν επι τον τοπον αναβλεψας ο ιησους ειδεν αυτον και ειπεν προς αυτον
ζακχαιε σπευσας καταβηθι σημερον γαρ εν τω οικω σου δει με μειναι And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw him, and[6]
said to him, “Zacchaeus,
hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” |
6. και
σπευσας κατεβη και υπεδεξατο αυτον χαιρων And hurrying, he came down, and received him joyfully. |
7. και
ιδοντες παντες[7] διεγογγυζον λεγοντες οτι
παρα αμαρτωλω ανδρι εισηλθεν καταλυσαι And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, “He has gone in to
stay with a sinful man.” |
8. σταθεις
δε ζακχαιος ειπεν προς τον κυριον ιδου τα ημιση[8] των υπαρχοντων μου κυριε
διδωμι τοις πτωχοις και ει τινος τι εσυκοφαντησα αποδιδωμι τετραπλουν But standing, Zacchaeus said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half
of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I
restore it fourfold.” |
9. ειπεν
δε προς αυτον ο ιησους οτι σημερον σωτηρια τω οικω τουτω εγενετο καθοτι και
αυτος υιος αβρααμ εστιν And Jesus said to him, “Today, salvation has come to this house, because he
also is a son of Abraham. |
10. ηλθεν
γαρ ο υιος του ανθρωπου ζητησαι και σωσαι το απολωλος For
the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.” |
[1] NA-Text and Vg-St read “αυτος”
and omit “ην” (Latin equivalent: “ipse”), which is supported by codices B, K, T, both
families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 579, 2542 and
the old Latin codices. Codices א, L, minuscules 892, 1241
read “και ην πλουσιος”. The TR is supported by codices A, (W), minuscules
565, 700, 1424, the Byzantine manuscripts, the old Latin codex itf
and Theophylact. The Alexandrian form of this text is well supported and the
meaning is the same.
[2] NA-Text adds “εις το”.
[3] NA-Text and P-Text read “συκομορεαν”,
which is supported by codices א, B, D (συκομωρεαν), Θ (συκομωρεαν) and Theophylact. The TR is
supported by part of the Byzantine manuscripts. The spelling found in the NA-Text
has been adopted in the Greek text.
[4] NA-Text, P-Text, WPF35
and M-text omit “δι”.
This omission is supported by codices א, A, B, D and part of the
Byzantine manuscripts. The inclusion is supported by codex Θ, part of the Byzantine manuscripts and
Theophylact. The omission has been adopted in the Greek text.
[5] M-Text reads “εμελλεν”,
which is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The TR is
supported by codices א, A, B, D and Θ. The TR is very well supported and stands in no
need of correction.
[6] NA-Text omits “saw him, and”,
which is possibly due to a scribal error caused by parablepsis (ειδεν αυτον
και ειπεν,
thus missing “saw him and”).
[7] NA-Text, P-Text, WPF35
and M-Text read “παντες”, which is based on a broader array of evidence and
has been adopted in the Greek text.
[8] NA-Text reads “ημισια”.
Same word, different spelling.
