Chapter 18
1. ελεγεν
δε και παραβολην αυτοις προς το δειν παντοτε προσευχεσθαι αυτους[1] και μη εκκακειν[2] And he also[3]
spoke a parable to them that they ought always to pray and not to faint, |
2. λεγων
κριτης τις ην εν τινι πολει τον θεον μη φοβουμενος και ανθρωπον μη
εντρεπομενος saying, “There was a judge in a certain city who did not fear God and did not
respect man. |
3. χηρα
δε ην εν τη πολει εκεινη και ηρχετο προς αυτον λεγουσα εκδικησον με απο του
αντιδικου μου Now
there was a widow in that city, and she came to him, saying, ‘Give me justice
against my adversary!’ |
4. και
ουκ ηθελεν[4] επι χρονον μετα δε ταυτα
ειπεν εν εαυτω ει και τον θεον ου φοβουμαι και ανθρωπον ουκ[5] εντρεπομαι And
he would not for a while; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I do not
fear God and do not respect man, |
5. δια
γε το παρεχειν μοι κοπον την χηραν ταυτην εκδικησω αυτην ινα μη εις τελος
ερχομενη υπωπιαζη[6] με yet
because this widow bothers me, I will give her justice, lest she wear me out
by her continual coming.’” |
6. ειπεν
δε ο κυριος ακουσατε τι ο κριτης της αδικιας λεγει And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. |
7. ο
δε θεος ου μη ποιησει[7] την εκδικησιν των
εκλεκτων αυτου των βοωντων προς αυτον[8] ημερας και νυκτος και
μακροθυμει[9] επ αυτοις And
will not God give justice to his elect who are cry to him day and night, and
yet he exercises patience with them? |
8. λεγω
υμιν οτι ποιησει την εκδικησιν αυτων εν ταχει πλην ο υιος του ανθρωπου ελθων
αρα ευρησει την πιστιν επι της γης I
tell you that he will give them justice quickly. Nevertheless, when the Son
of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” |
[1] NA-Text and P-Text add “αυτους”,
which is supported by codices א, A, B, Θ, part
of the Byzantine manuscripts and Origen (Commentary on the gospel of Matthew,
book 14 ch.25).The omission is supported by codices א1, D, family of manuscripts ƒ1,
minuscule 1424, part of the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. This pronoun
has been added to the text on the excellent support of a diversity of
witnesses.
[2] NA-Text reads “εγκακειν”.
Same verb and verbal tense with a different spelling.
[3] NA-Text omits “also”.
[4] NA-Text, Vg-St and WPF35
read “ηθελεν” (imperfect instead of aorist, Latin equivalent: “nolebat”),
which is supported by codices א, A, B, D, Θ, part
of the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by part of the Byzantine
manuscripts and Theophylact. The imperfect tense has been adopted in the text
on the excellent support of a diversity of witnesses.
[5] NA-Text and Vg-St read “ουδε ανθρωπον” (Latin equivalent: “nec hominem”), which is supported by codices א, B, L, T, Θ, minuscules 579vid,
892 and 2542. The TR is supported by codices A, D, W, Ψ, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13,
minuscule 33 and the Byzantine manuscripts. Both are well supported and they
mean the same thing.
[6] M-Text reads “υποπιαζη”, which
is supported by codex Θ, part
of the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The TR is supported by codices א, A, B, D and part of the Byzantine
manuscripts. The TR is very well supported and stands in no need of correction.
[7] NA-Text, P-Text, WPF35
and M-Text read “ποιηση” (aorist subjunctive instead of future indicative), which
is supported by codices א, B, D, part of the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The
TR is supported by codices A, Θ and
part of the Byzantine manuscripts. The aorist subjunctive has been adopted in
the Greek text.
[8] NA-Text reads “αυτω”.
[9] NA-Text reads “μακροθυμει” (indicative instead of participle), which is supported by codices א, A, B, D, L, Q, T, Θ, Ψ, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 579, 1241 and 2542. The participle is supported by codex W, family of manuscripts ƒ13, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The evidence is showing that the participle is a local adjustment to the text. The indicative has then been adopted in the Greek text.
