Luke 18:9-17 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Luke

Chapter 18




9. ειπεν δε και προς τινας τους πεποιθοτας εφ εαυτοις οτι εισιν δικαιοι και εξουθενουντας τους λοιπους την παραβολην ταυτην

And he also[1] spoke this parable to certain people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and regarded others with contempt:

10. ανθρωποι δυο ανεβησαν εις το ιερον προσευξασθαι ο εις φαρισαιος και ο ετερος τελωνης

“Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee, and the other a tax collector.

11. ο φαρισαιος σταθεις προς εαυτον ταυτα προσηυχετο ο θεος ευχαριστω σοι οτι ουκ ειμι ωσπερ οι λοιποι των ανθρωπων αρπαγες αδικοι μοιχοι η και ως ουτος ο τελωνης

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not as the rest of men: extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

12. νηστευω δις του σαββατου αποδεκατω παντα οσα κτωμαι

I fast twice a week. I give tithes of all that I get.’

13. και[2] ο τελωνης μακροθεν εστως ουκ ηθελεν ουδε τους οφθαλμους εις τον ουρανον επαραι αλλ ετυπτεν εις[3] το στηθος αυτου λεγων ο θεος ιλασθητι μοι τω αμαρτωλω

But standing afar off, the tax collector would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’

14. λεγω υμιν κατεβη ουτος δεδικαιωμενος εις τον οικον αυτου η γαρ εκεινος[4] οτι πας ο υψων εαυτον ταπεινωθησεται ο δε ταπεινων εαυτον υψωθησεται

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

15. προσεφερον δε αυτω και τα βρεφη ινα αυτων απτηται ιδοντες δε οι μαθηται επετιμησαν[5] αυτοις

Now they were bringing even infants[6] to him, that he might touch them. But when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.

16. ο δε ιησους προσκαλεσαμενος αυτα ειπεν[7] αφετε τα παιδια ερχεσθαι προς με και μη κωλυετε αυτα των γαρ τοιουτων εστιν η βασιλεια του θεου

But Jesus called them to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for of such is the kingdom of God.

17. αμην λεγω υμιν ος εαν[8] μη δεξηται την βασιλειαν του θεου ως παιδιον ου μη εισελθη εις αυτην

Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will by no means enter it.”



[1] M-Text and WPF35 omit “also”, which is supported by codex A, the Diatessaron and the Byzantine manuscripts. The inclusion is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Theophylact. The inclusion is well supported so the conjunction has been maintained in the text.  

[2] NA-Text reads “δε”, placing the conjunction after the article. Same meaning.

[3] NA-Text “παρ εκεινον”, which is supported by codices א, B, L, T, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscule 579, and Origen. M-Text, P-Text and WPF35 read “η γαρ εκεινος”, which is supported by codices A, K, N, P, Q, Γ, Δ, Ψ, family of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscules 565, 700, 892, 1241, 1424, 2542, the Byzantine manuscripts and the Harklean Syriac version. The TR is supported by codices W, Θ and Theophylact. The support for the M-Text is superior from a diversity of witnesses and has been adopted in the Greek text.

[4] NA-Text omits “εις” on a good support of a diversity of witnesses.

[5] NA-Text reads “επετιμων” (imperfect instead of aorist).

[6] Or: babies.

[7] NA-Text reads “προσεκαλεσατο αυτα λεγων”  and renders “called them to him, saying”.

[8] NA-Text reads “αν”.
