Matthew 3:13-17 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Matthew

Chapter 3



13. Τότε παραγίνεται ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰορδάνην πρὸς τὸν Ἰωάννην τοῦ βαπτισθῆναι ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him.

14. Ὁ δὲ Ἰωάννης διεκώλυεν αὐτὸν λέγων, Ἐγὼ χρείαν ἔχω ὑπὸ σοῦ βαπτισθῆναι, καὶ σὺ ἔρχῃ πρός με;

But John[1] tried to hinder him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”

15. Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν, Ἄφες ἄρτι, οὕτως γὰρ πρέπον ἐστὶν ἡμῖν πληρῶσαι πᾶσαν δικαιοσύνην. Τότε ἀφίησιν αὐτόν.

But answering, Jesus said to him, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.

16. Καὶ[2] βαπτισθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνέβη εὐθὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕδατος. Καὶ ἰδοὺ, ἀνεῴχθησαν[3] αὐτῷ οἱ οὐρανοί, καὶ εἶδεν τὸ[4] πνεῦμα τοῦ[5] θεου καταβαῖνον ὡσεὶ περιστερὰν καὶ[6] ἐρχόμενον ἐπʼ αὐτόν

And when Jesus was baptized, he immediately went up from the water. And behold, the heavens were opened to him[7], and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and coming upon him

17. καὶ ἰδοὺ, φωνὴ ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν λέγουσα, Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός, ἐν ᾧ εὐδόκησα.

and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

 



[1] Textual critics have debated if the omission of the proper noun “John” here is original on the authority of codices א, B, the Sahidic Coptic version and Eusebius. Tischendorf, Wordsworth, Lachmann, Hort and Baljon have omitted it in their compilations. Tregelles and Von Soden bracketed the proper noun in the text as doubtful. Griesbach, Scholz and Alford included the proper noun in the text. This omission is a local deviation of the text that has against it the combined authority of p96 א1 C Dsupp K L P W Γ Δ 0233 0250 ƒ1 ƒ13 33 565 700 892 1241 1424 Byz it vg syr copmae copbo Diatessaron Jerome Theophylact. This is a typical example of Alexandrian simplification, probably because the proper name had already been mentioned in the previous verse. The current 28th edition of the Nestle-Aland text, the vulgate of Stuttgart, the Clementine vulgate, the Patriarchal text, Wilbur Pickering-family 35, the Majority Text, the Complutensian Polyglot and the Textus Receptus read “John”, which is certainly the correct reading.

[2] NA-Text and Vg-St read “δε” placing the conjunction after the verb (latin equivalent: “autem”): א B | TR: D K L P Γ Byz Theophylact || No need of correction.

[3] NA-Text reads “ηνεωχθησαν”. Same verbal tense, different spelling.

[4] NA-Text brackets “το” (the).

[5] NA-Text brackets “του” (of).

[6] NA-Text brackets “και” (and).

[7] NA-Text brackets “to him” (αυτω).
