Mark 6:1-6 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 6



1. και εξηλθεν εκειθεν και ηλθεν[1] εις την πατριδα αυτου και ακολουθουσιν αυτω οι μαθηται αυτου

And he went out from there and came into his own country, and his disciples followed him.

2. και γενομενου σαββατου ηρξατο εν τη συναγωγη διδασκειν και πολλοι ακουοντες εξεπλησσοντο λεγοντες ποθεν τουτω ταυτα και τις η σοφια η δοθεισα αυτω[2] [3] και [4] δυναμεις τοιαυται δια των χειρων αυτου γινονται[5]

And when the Sabbath had come, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things?” and, “What is the wisdom given to him, that such mighty works come about by his hands?

3. ουχ ουτος εστιν ο τεκτων ο υιος [6] μαριας αδελφος δε[7] ιακωβου και ιωση[8] και ιουδα και σιμωνος και ουκ εισιν αι αδελφαι αυτου ωδε προς ημας και εσκανδαλιζοντο εν αυτω

Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judah and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” So they were offended at him.

4. και[9] ελεγεν  αυτοις ο ιησους οτι ουκ εστιν προφητης ατιμος ει μη εν τη πατριδι αυτου και εν τοις συγγενεσιν[10] και εν τη οικια αυτου

And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own relatives, and in his own house.”

5. και ουκ ηδυνατο[11] εκει ουδεμιαν δυναμιν ποιησαι ει μη ολιγοις αρρωστοις επιθεις τας χειρας εθεραπευσεν

And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.

6. και εθαυμαζεν δια την απιστιαν αυτων και περιηγεν τας κωμας κυκλω διδασκων

And he marveled because of their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching.



[1] NA-Text reads “ερχεται” (present middle deponent instead of second aorist active).

[2] NA-Text reads “τουτω” (this [man]). This is probably a scribal adjustment that originated in the Alexandrian transmission line based on the previous question.

[3] NA-Text and M-Text omit “οτι”. This omission is supported by codices א, B and the Byzantine manuscripts. Codices D and Θ read “ινα”. Theophylact supports the TR. It seems that the scribes and fathers felt that there was something missing to connect both clauses and added “οτι” or “ινα”. The omission is most likely preserving the original reading. The text has been adjusted accordingly.

[4] NA-Text adds the definite article “αι”.

[5] NA-Text reads “γινομεναι” (participle instead of indicative).

[6] NA-Text and P-Text add the definite article “της” before Mary, which is supported by codices א, B and Θ. The omission is supported by codex D, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. This is possibly a natural addition to the text. The genitive can be made without the article.

[7] NA-Text reads “και” placing the conjunction before brother. The meaning is the same.

[8] NA-Text reads “ιωσητος”. Same proper name.

[9] NA-Text and VgSt read “και” (Latin equivalent: “et”), placing it before the verb at the beginning of the verse, which is supported by codices א, B, D, Θ and Bede. The TR is supported by the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. Mark uses both forms interchangeably with proper names, but the Alexandrian reading is harder and has been preferred here.

[10] NA-Text and VgSt read “συγγενευσιν αυτου” (Latin equivalent: “cognatione sua”). The addition of the pronoun is supported by codex B. The omission is supported by codices א1, D, Θ and Theophylact. The addition of the pronoun is most certainly a scribal edition, mimicking the pronoun after “country” and “house”. Even though the translation adds the pronoun for readability’s sake, it is incorrect to add it to the Greek text.

[11] NA-Text reads “εδυνατο”. Same verbal tense with a slightly different spelling.
