Mark 4:21-29 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 4



21. και ελεγεν αυτοις μητι ο λυχνος ερχεται ινα υπο τον μοδιον τεθη η υπο την κλινην ουχ ινα επι την λυχνιαν επιτεθη[1]

And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not put on a stand?

22. ου γαρ εστιν τι κρυπτον ο[2] εαν μη[3] φανερωθη ουδε εγενετο αποκρυφον αλλ ινα εις φανερον ελθη

For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, neither was anything made secret but that it should come to light.

23. ει τις εχει ωτα ακουειν ακουετω

If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

24. και ελεγεν αυτοις βλεπετε τι ακουετε εν ω μετρω μετρειτε μετρηθησεται υμιν και προστεθησεται υμιν τοις ακουουσιν

Then he said to them, “Take heed what you hear. With whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear[4] more will be given.

25. ος γαρ αν εχη[5] δοθησεται αυτω και ος ουκ εχει και ο εχει αρθησεται απ αυτου

For whoever has, to him more will be given; and he who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”

26. και ελεγεν ουτως εστιν η βασιλεια του θεου ως εαν ανθρωπος βαλη τον σπορον επι της γης

And he said, “so is the Kingdom of God, as if[6] a man should cast seed on the ground,

27. και καθευδη και εγειρηται νυκτα και ημεραν και ο σπορος βλαστανη[7] και μηκυνηται ως ουκ οιδεν αυτος

and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, though he does not know how.

28. αυτοματη γαρ η γη καρποφορει πρωτον χορτον ειτα σταχυν ειτα πληρη[8] σιτον εν τω σταχυι

For[9] the earth bears fruit by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.

29. οταν δε παραδω[10] ο καρπος ευθεως[11] αποστελλει το δρεπανον οτι παρεστηκεν ο θερισμος

But when the fruit is ripe, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”



[1] NA-Text reads “τεθη”. Same root.

[2] NA-Text reads “κρυπτον”, omitting “τι” before the adjective and “ο” after it.

[3] NA-Text adds “ινα” (so that).

[4] NA-Text and VgSt omit “who hear”. The omission is supported by codices א, B, C, L, Δ, minuscules 122*, 161*, 700, 892 and 2427, 5 old Latin codices (itaur, itc, itff2, iti and itr1), the Ethiopic version and Bede. The Bohairic Coptic version is divided. The inclusion is supported by codices A, E, F, H, K, Θ, Π, Σ, 0107, 0133, 0167, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 28, 33, 157, 180, 205, 597, 1006, 1009, 1010, 1071, 1079, 1195, 1216, 1230, 1241, 1242, 1243, 1253, 1342, 1365, 1424, 1505, 1546 and 2174, the Byzantine manuscripts, 2 old Latin codices (itf and itq), the Peshitta, the Harklean Syriac, the Gothic, the (Armenian), the Georgian, the Gothic, the Slavic version, the Diatessaron and Theophylact.  The inclusion is more widespread. The omission was likely due to a scribal error caused by visual homoeoteleuton (υμιν τοις ακουουσιν, thus missing “who hear”)

[5] NA-Text reads “εχει”, instead of “αν εχη”. “ος γαρ αν” plus a verb is genuinely Markan (see Mark 3:35, 4:25, 8:35, 8:38 and 9:41) .

[6] NA-Text omits “if” (Gr.: “εαν”).

[7] NA-Text reads “βλαστα”, same word spelled differently.

[8] NA-Text reads “πληρη[ς]” (nominative instead of accusative).

[9] NA-Text omits “For”.

[10] NA-Text reads “παραδοι”. Same verbal tense spelled differently.

[11] NA-Text reads “ευθυς”. Same meaning.
