Luke 9:37-45 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 9




37. εγενετο δε εν[1] τη εξης ημερα κατελθοντων αυτων απο του ορους συνηντησεν αυτω οχλος πολυς

Now it happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great multitude met him.

38. και ιδου ανηρ απο του οχλου ανεβοησεν[2] λεγων διδασκαλε δεομαι σου επιβλεψαι[3] επι τον υιον μου οτι μονογενης εστιν μοι

And behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you, look on my son, for he is my only child.

39. και ιδου πνευμα λαμβανει αυτον και εξαιφνης κραζει και σπαρασσει αυτον μετα αφρου και μογις αποχωρει απ αυτου συντριβον αυτον

And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. And it throws him into convulsion with foaming, and it hardly departs from him, bruising him.

40. και εδεηθην των μαθητων σου ινα εκβαλωσιν[4] αυτο και ουκ ηδυνηθησαν

And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.”

41. αποκριθεις δε ο ιησους ειπεν ω γενεα απιστος και διεστραμμενη εως ποτε εσομαι προς υμας και ανεξομαι υμων προσαγαγε ωδε τον υιον σου

And answering, Jesus said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”

42. ετι δε προσερχομενου αυτου ερρηξεν αυτον το δαιμονιον και συνεσπαραξεν επετιμησεν δε ο ιησους τω πνευματι τω ακαθαρτω και ιασατο τον παιδα και απεδωκεν αυτον τω πατρι αυτου

And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the child and gave him back to his father.

43. εξεπλησσοντο δε παντες επι τη μεγαλειοτητι του θεου παντων δε θαυμαζοντων επι πασιν οις εποιει[5] ειπεν προς τους μαθητας αυτου

And they were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marveling at everything he was doing, he said to his disciples,

44. θεσθε υμεις εις τα ωτα υμων τους λογους τουτους ο γαρ υιος του ανθρωπου μελλει παραδιδοσθαι εις χειρας ανθρωπων

“Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of men.”

45. οι δε ηγνοουν το ρημα τουτο και ην παρακεκαλυμμενον απ αυτων ινα μη αισθωνται αυτο και εφοβουντο ερωτησαι αυτον περι του ρηματος τουτου

But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.



[1] NA-Text omits “εν”.

[2] NA-Text reads “εβοησεν”. Those two verbs can be used interchangeably.

[3] NA-Text and M-Text read “επιβλεψαι” (infinitive instead of imperative), which is supported by papyrus 45, codices A, B, (C), Θ and part of the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by codices א, D, W, 0115, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 33, 565, 700, 892, 1424, 2542 and Theophylact. The TR is very well supported and stands in no need of correction. The support for the infinitive is better and has been adopted in the Greek text.

[4] NA-Text, P-Text, WPF35 and M-Text read “εκβαλωσιν” (second aorist instead of present), which is supported by codices א, B, Θ and the Byzantine manuscripts. The TR is supported by Theophylact. The verbal tense has been adjusted following the NA-Text and the M-Text.

[5] NA-Text and Vg-St read “εποιει” and renders “everything he was doing” with the omission of the proper noun “Jesus” and the verb in the imperfect tense instead of aorist. This reading is supported by papyrus 75, codices א, B, D, L, Ξ, family of manuscripts ƒ1, minuscules 579, 700, 1241, 2542, the Syriac Sinaiticus, the Curetonian Syriac and the Coptic versions. The verb in the imperfect tense with the addition of the proper noun is supported by codices A, C, Θ, Ψ, 0115, family of manuscripts ƒ13, minuscules 33 and 892, the old Latin codices itf, itq and itr1 and some manuscripts of the Bohairic Coptic version. The TR is supported by codices W, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The imperfect tense is widespread across all text types and the proper noun was likely added to highlight that the one who had done these things was Jesus who is now going to say something to his disciples. Scribes thought that “everything he was doing, he said to his disciples” was defective in style for a public or private reading and added a proper noun for clarity’s sake. Therefore, the Greek text has been adjusted, following the NA-Text.
