Luke 10:38-42 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

Chapter 10




38. εγενετο[1] δε εν τω πορευεσθαι αυτους και αυτος εισηλθεν εις κωμην τινα γυνη δε τις ονοματι μαρθα υπεδεξατο αυτον εις τον οικον αυτης

Now it happened as they went on their way that he entered a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house[2].

39. και τηδε ην αδελφη καλουμενη μαρια η[3] και παρακαθισασα[4] παρα[5] τους ποδας του ιησου ηκουεν τον λογον αυτου

And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’[6] feet and heard his word.

40. η δε μαρθα περιεσπατο περι πολλην διακονιαν επιστασα δε ειπεν κυριε ου μελει σοι οτι η αδελφη μου μονην με κατελιπεν[7] διακονειν ειπε ουν αυτη ινα μοι συναντιλαβηται

But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came up to him, and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”

41. αποκριθεις δε ειπεν αυτη ο ιησους μαρθα μαρθα μεριμνας και τυρβαζη[8] περι πολλα

And answering, Jesus[9] said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,

42. ενος δε εστιν χρεια μαρια[10] δε[11] την αγαθην μεριδα εξελεξατο ητις ουκ αφαιρεθησεται απ[12] αυτης

but one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.”



[1] NA-Text omits “εγενετο” (it happened).

[2] NA-Text omits “into her house”, which is likely a scribal error caused by visual homoeoarcton (αυτον εις τον οικον αυτης, thus missing “into her house”). 

[3] NA-Text reads “μαριαμ [η]” (indeclinable proper noun instead of nominative singular feminine).

[4] NA-Text reads “παρακαθεσθεισα” (passive deponent instead of active).

[5] NA-Text reads “προς”.

[6] NA-Text and Vg-St read “Lord’s”, which is supported by papyrus 3, codices א, B2, D, L, Ξ, 579, 892, the Curetonian Syriac, a marginal note in the Harklean Syriac version, some manuscripts of the Sahidic Coptic version and the Bohairic Coptic version. “Jesus” is supported by papyri 45 and 75, codices A, B*, C2, W, Θ, Ψ, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscule 33, the Byzantine manuscripts, the Syriac Sinaiticus, the Harklean Syriac, some manuscripts of the Sahidic and Bohairic Coptic versions and Theophylact. The difference here is between the nomen sacrum IY and KY. In Luke 8:35, Luke writes the same “at Jesus’ feet” with “IY”, which may indicate a tendency for this writer to have written “Jesus” here and because it is not a parallel passage and it is distant from this context, the risk of harmonization is low. Besides, the support for the Byzantine reading is excellent, which includes the original reading in codex Vaticanus, papyri 45 and 75, so it stands unaltered in the text.

[7] M-Text reads “κατελειπεν” (imperfect instead of second aorist), which is supported by codices A, B*, C, L, Θ, Ξ, the Byzantine manuscripts and Theophylact. The TR is supported by Papyri 45 and 75, codices א, B2, D, (W), Ψ, both families of manuscripts ƒ1 and ƒ13, minuscules 565, 579, 700, 892, 1241, 2542 and Basil. Both are well supported.

[8] NA-Text reads “θορυβαζη”. Those verbs are interchangeable.

[9] NA-Text and Vg-St read “Lord”, which is possibly an adjustment based on the same nomen sacrum found in verse 39. “Jesus” is supported by all text types, including the original reading in codex Vaticanus.

[10] NA-Text reads “μαριαμ” (indeclinable proper noun instead of nominative singular feminine).

[11] NA-Text reads “γαρ” (“for” instead of “and”).

[12] NA-Text omits “απ”, possibly caused by visual homoeoarcton (απ αυτης, thus missing “απ”) or removed for being considered superfluous.
