Matthew 16:5-12 - Revision of the Textus Receptus

The gospel according to Matthew

Chapter 16


 

5. Καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ πέραν ἐπελάθοντο ἄρτους λαβεῖν.

When his[1] disciples came to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.

6. Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ὁρᾶτε καὶ προσέχετε ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων.

And Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

7. Οἱ δὲ διελογίζοντο ἐν ἑαυτοῖς λέγοντες ὅτι Ἄρτους οὐκ ἐλάβομεν.

They then reasoned among themselves, saying, “it is because we brought no bread.”

8. Γνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, ὀλιγόπιστοι, ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἐλάβετε;

But Jesus, aware of this, said to them[2], “Why do you reason among yourselves, you of little faith, the fact you that you brought[3] no bread?

9. Οὔπω νοεῖτε, οὐδὲ μνημονεύετε τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους τῶν πεντακισχιλίων καὶ πόσους κοφίνους ἐλάβετε;

Do you not yet understand or remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up,

10. οὐδὲ τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους τῶν τετρακισχιλίων, καὶ πόσας σπυρίδας ἐλάβετε;

or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?

11. Πῶς οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι οὐ περὶ ἄρτου[4] εἶπον ὑμῖν; προσέχειν[5] ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων.

How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread, but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?”  

12. Τότε συνῆκαν ὅτι οὐκ εἶπεν προσέχειν ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τοῦ ἄρτου[6] ἀλλ[7] ἀπὸ τῆς διδαχῆς τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων.

Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.



[1] NA-Text omits “his” and renders “the disciples”.

[2] NA-Text and Vg-St omit “to them”: א B D Θ | TR: C Byz Jerome Theophylact. The wording is slightly different in the parallel passage in Mark 8:17, so harmonization cannot be taken for granted. Also, a supposed addition of the pronoun is not needed to clarify who is the audience to whom Jesus is going to speak. There is no strong reason to remove the pronoun from the text.

Origen Eusebius Chrysostom Theophyalct || The verb “to have” has all indication of being a foreign element to the text, brough from the parallel passage in Mark 8:17. First the narrator tells us that they had brought no bread using the same verb in both gospels. Then the disciples begin to wonder about the leaven of the pharisees and the Sadducees. Matthew tells us that their discussion revolved around “bringing no bread” and Mark about “having no bread”. Jesus is then going to interact with their thoughts, Matthew naturally using the verb “bring” and Mark “have”. The verb “have” in Matthew in the Alexandrian text seems to be a foreign element brought into the text of Matthew from the parallel account in Mark, probably under the influence of the Diatessaron that followed the order “bring” from Mark 8:14, “bring” from Matthew 16:7 and “have” from Mark 8:17 (section 23).

[4] NA-Text reads “αρτων” (plural of bread instead of singular). Same thing in verse 12.

[5] NA-Text reads “προσεχετε δε”, adds the “but” that is implicit in the Byzantine text and the imperative mood for the verb “beware”.

[6] NA-Text reads “των αρτων” (plural: “of the loaves” instead of the singular “bread”).

[7] NA-Text, WPF35 and M-Text read “αλλα”: א B D Θ Theophylact. Text adjusted.
